Someone please explain mod selection to me

You can copy the game folder and paste it in docs mod folder. Then you can mod the game anyway you wish and the game will use your mod instead of what the normal game does.

My first swing at this was to reduce the interval time required between trades. I changed it from 20 turns to 1. LOL, I was actually amazed that it worked, but it did work perfectly. They have changed the interval in the patch but my mod seems to still be working.

My question is, how do you choose to stop using a mod and play the standard game. Obviously I can edit my doc mod files to do this but I am wondering, as more and more mods are made available, surely there will be a way to choose a particular mod without having to edit your files every time you want to play a new mod.

As an afterthought, I believe there is an option on the start screen to use or not use mods, but I still wonder how you select among various mods that you want to use, without having to mess with your doc files every time.

In other games that allow modding I have seen the start screen include a Mods option that can be opened and any mod in your files can be picked, similar to loading a saved game.

I am probably overlooking something obvious, but I am confused on how this works.

You just have to remove the mod from the mod folder. Personally I have a backup in another folder else where for when I want to put it back in, just in case I accidentally delete it instead of cutting.

this might be adressed when they get steamworkshop working for mods but having an option in the startmenu to determine which mods to use and which not to use would be nice

Options/Gameplay uncheck Mod use should do it.
