This exact problem happens to me as well. I have the latest update via Steam. I have AMD hardware, that is motherboard chipset, video card, cpu. I updated all my drivers and tried again. Same problem.

Any update on this issue? I'm having the exact same issue. Ticket submitted a couple of days ago.

Please make sure to send your files to support. So that we can look further into resolving the issue.

Link to support tool:

But to try and get you running again, please try the following:

1. Disable cloud saves: http://screencast.com/t/lSyZWnwMTgiI

2. Rename your "..\Documents\My Games\GalCiv3" directory to GakCiv3.old

3. Restart the game and see if you have the issue.

4. Try a fresh game.

Been there, done that (ticket #MIW-317-37260). Updated to the opt-in patch this morning, redid everything you listed. No change. Immediate CTD after the intro video. Can't try a fresh game because I've never been able to get past the intro!

This post may help shed some light on your issue:

The problem we have seen is that some people have empty ship designs, no hull, no components, nothing. When the game is building your list of ships it tries to process this and crashes. Exactly as you folks have stated, deleting your ship designs resolves the problem.

We have a "fix" in the 1.02 opt-in where we validate the ship file before we load it. That will keep the crash from happening.

But we still don't know what causes the corrupt ship designs to be made. One player who passed me a broken ship said he created it in a multiplayer game, but we haven't been able to reproduce that as a cause. I'm going to try to create one in the campaign and see if that can be a part of it.

But for now the answer is:

1. On 1.01 or earlier if you delete your custom ships from your My Games directory it should fix this. This solution stinks.

2. On 1.02 (currently available as opt-in) you should be able to play without having to delete anything.

If anyone is still having the issue with 1.02 I would love to get your My Games files so I can see if there is another use case we should be checking for.

1.02 didn't fix it for me. There are no ship designs. I can't get past the opening video. It plays then crashes to desktop. So frustrating...

tdthread,

Sorry for the issue you are having with GalCiv3. I pulled up your support ticket, thanks for submitting that.

Your game is crashing because it can't access the font files:

"Debug Message:  LoadFontInfo failed to create font face: C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\Consola.ttf, face #0. Error: cannot open resource"

I believe this is supposed to be a base font supplies with windows. Any idea why it wouldn't be on your computer?

Grabbed the Consolas font and reinstalled it. Still not working and the error log is generating the same error message. I found a post that said if I deleted the K2 font files from the Stardock/GalCiv3 folder, the program would run. It does, but I have to delete the files every time before running the game.

tdthread,

maybe your windows font cache (\windows\system32\Fntcache.dat) is corrupt.

Thanks all for your help. Finally got it fixed. The problem WAS the font. Consola was installed, but only the regular font (not the bold, italic, & bold-italic). Once I added the other three, voila! No more issues. :)

Woohoo! Thanks for letting us know. That is a base windows font so we don't have rights to redistribute it, so that was a problem in your windows build.

That's really interesting.

When you installed Windows did you set up not to have that font? I wonder how that font wasn't installed in the first place as it might help others in the future.

No idea. I rarely mess with the fonts, and it's a standard Windows install (8.1). If I had to guess, at some point I probably uninstalled a program that used that font and maybe it deleted the font too? Other than that, I'm clueless. I do know I would have never intentionally deleted it. Wouldn't have any reason to.

I have this same issue. I created a ticket. Hope I can get this resolved too. Second game breaking bug I've had with this game since release. :(

Did you check your Windows/Fonts folder to confirm consola.ttf, consolab.ttf, consolai.ttf, and consolaz.ttf were installed?
