Suggestion: Full list of ships and requirements to get them?

So i'm new to this franchise, never played any of the others. I'm enjoying it so far minus the random crashes...

My suggestion is that I find myself trying to figure out how to get to certain builds of ships, but I have no way of seeing whats even available without having to go to a wiki or something.

I'd like to maybe see an option in the shipyards to see ALL ships (even ones you can't yet build) and have the required techs/researches listed to acquire each one.

Also the sort function on the shipyard doesn't seem very useful. Any way to make it show Offense, Defense, Escort etc? or maybe sort by only missile firing ships, or kinetic attack... something like that.. better sorting basically.

Also, I can't design ships with equipment i haven't researched yet. Any way around that?

Keep up the great work!

That's the whole point of research. The only way around would be to research more ;)

Edit: there's a cheat mode of course:

(see specifically the "unlock" command)

This game doesn't carry a whole lot of premade ships. Either the player designs their own ships or the game designs the ships.

I like leaving the ship designing to the game as then I don't need to worry about redesigning my ship for every time I research a new weapon tech. The ships the game designs for you is good enough for the most part (and made using currently available techs), but it could include a mechanism so that you could design your own blueprints, how the game designs new ships.

You can do modding though. You can find the original game file for ship blueprints here:
Galactic Civilizations III\data\Game\ShipBlueprintDefs.xml

I'm not an expert on modding this game so you might want to find a guide or something if you want to do more than take a peek under the hood of this game.

Thats more or less what I was looking for. I get that you wouldn't be able to make a ship because you don't have the parts, but designing one ship that upgrades when you do finally research the next parts would be nice vice having to manually do it..

Still would like to see a better sort function on the shipyard though which was more the point of my post.
