One of Pocol Haum's lesser known songs, The Milk of Human Kindness, featuring Robin Trower on guitar.

Wishbone Ash, started out about 12 miles from where I lived in Devon England... managed to see them a few times before migrating to Oz.

Somebody else whose beginnings were not far from me In Devon..... Snowy White, who played with such greats as Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd, Peter Green of early Fleetwood Mac fame, and former Rolling Stone, Mick Taylor...

These days he's primarily a blues player, but he can still wield a pretty mean rock axe as well.

Personally I wouldn't bother.... not the same band without Bonn Scott.... and Brian Johnson isn't even a 6th or 7th next best... grates my nerves like chalk dragged across a blackboard.

A bit like the Strolling Bones, really... should have quit before arthritis and dementia set in. :-"

Well...Scott was once called the greatest rock voice of all time...so it's a hard act to follow but Johnson does a pretty good job of it.

...and a squillion others agree...the first concert at Etihad stadium sold out in less than 30 minutes...so we're going to the second...;)

Each to his/her own, I guess, but Johnson's vocals are grating and distinctly off-putting for me.  I don't care how many agree, he sounds like a dying duck in a thunderstorm, as my dear old dad used to say... like somebody's strangling the cat.

Hehe, I wonder if he 'sings' in the shower... and whether his neighbours called the RSPCA. :-"

Yeah, WTF in Hell were you thinking?

I had no chance of making it to that most memorable concert - being on Oz n' all - but I have watched the video numerous times [first on VHS then DVD, now BluRay] and wished I could have been.  With Van Zant on vocals, 3 lead guitars wailing, and Artimus Pyle on drums, like WOW.  Superb doesn't even do it justice, given the quality of that performance.

A band that impresses me, with its ability to cover Lynyrd Skynyrd songs well, not to mention Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, etc, is Gov't Mule.  If you ever get the chance, go see them, they're quite good and know how to put on a great show... IMHO, given all the live clips on You Tube I've watched.

Tammy Van Zant's tribute to her father, Ronnie Van Zant... who died in the tragic plane crash that took 3 members of Lynyrd Skynyrd way too early and deprived the world of 3 enormous talents.

I actually agree with you starkers. I was a pre-Johnson AC/DC fan but cannot listen to them now. I feel the same way about Bob Dylan, he might be able to write songs but he cant sing worth shit.

One of my top 3 bands of all time and Plant still has the voice. Some say at 66 he is a better vocalist than he was 35 years ago.

Yeah, if it had been me and that concert was anywhere within striking distance, I'd have pulled a sickie, put on a hippie hat, false beard and sunnies and turned up ready to rock n' roll the day/night away.

The hippie hat, false beard and sunnies?   Just in case the boss saw footage on the 6 O'clock news... and saw me... not sick.

I agree with you on when music was music.  With a handful of exceptions, there's not a lot beyond the 80's I bother with anymore.  Apart from a few older bands and artists continuing in the old vein, and some of the newer acts sticking with older, more traditional styles, I have little to no interest in the so-called music of the 2000s. Nope, I'm stuck back in the 60's 70's and earlier 80's

Yup, Johnsons vocals ruin otherwise perfectly good music.  Talking about strangling the cat... that's moments after you've applied thumbscrews to its nuts and poured hot treacle on its arse.

One of my top 3 bands of all time and Plant still has the voice. Some say at 66 he is a better vocalist than he was 35 years ago.

Led Zeppelin IS my favourite band of all time, with Ten Years After a close second and Black Sabbath tying with Pink Floyd for 3rd place. I have a long list of artists and bands after that, though, and I'd be here for a month of Sundays going through it.

As for Robert Plant's vocals being better nowadays, I always thought he was awesome, right through his career with Led Zeppelin, The HoneyDrippers and hs solo period.... when he reformed with Pagey.  Thing is, he STILL has it, without doubt, though he's more mature with it and better portrays a himself as a singer with great passion and feeling.  I saw Robert Plant at Festival Hall Brisbane in the mid-80's and came away awestruck... he was phenomenal.

I love this performance of Black Dog with Alison Krauss...

And their version of The Battle of Evermore...
