Move game from HDD to SSD

I have a HDD and a SSD in my rig.  The Steam game files are on the HDD and I'd like to move them to my SSD to speed up debugging.  Can I do this WITHOUT downloading the game again?  I'm on a cellular internet so data usage is limited.

Thanks!

Hmm. This is more of a Steam question than a GalCiv question since Steam handles all of that. I would typically just uninstall and reinstall in the new location (but i'm not data usage limited). Maybe others know another way?  You may try asking on the general steam forums since this wouldn't be game specific (if someone knows a way to do this with Dota2 it should work just as well for Gc3).

The serial number of the SSD would be dif form the HDD one.

You can backup the games in steam to an external, reintall steam to the ssd and then restore the games.

Sounds like the games were in the wrong place and steam on the ssd moved them to where they needed to be. Yes SSDs are that fast.

@mortili

got it.  Thanks everyone.  Here's the steps I took in order.

1.) copy the \Steam\steamapps\common\Galactic Civilizations III folder to a backup location

2.) go into Steam and remove the local game data from there.

3.) begin reinstalling GalCiv3, but create a new Steam folder on the SSD (Steam will only install into an empty folder)

4.) when the download starts, pause, then exit Steam

5.) copy the backup Galactic Civilizations III folder into the new \Steam\steamapps\common\ SSD directory, overwriting any existing files

6.) start Steam

7.) do NOT launch it from Steam -- instead navigate to the new \Steam\steamapps\common\Galactic Civilizations III folder and run 'GalCiv3.exe'.  It will start in  Steam, then verify the new local data.

8.) I did have to download a little bit, anout 110MB, but that's exponentially better than 3.8GB.

Thanks, all, and happy gaming!

Hey everyone!

I would like to preface this by saying the linked tool is not developed or supported by Stardock. Rather, this is something I use to manage my personal Steam library with my HDD and SSD. I recently came across the SteamTool Library Manager, which easily allows you to move games between drives with a few clicks. It uses the NTFS Junction function built into the file system and has made it far too easy to store an irresponsible number of games on my home system... Enjoy!

Check out the SteamTool Library Manager below:

With my SSDs raided I have the OS, Steam and GC on it and 16 RAM on a laptop. this is allowing me to play immense with 20+ races with no problems.
