Anomalies defended by pirates

When I tried to survey certain anomalies which were defended by pirates, I was given the choice to engage or not.   So I choose not to with the survey ship as early in the game they cannot be replaced easily.

So I sent a fleet of ships to clear out the pirates by sending them to the anomaly.  I got the message that only a survey ship can survey the anomaly.  I think that the fleet should be able to clear out the pirates so that the survey ship can return and survey the anomaly.

I ended up having to put my survey ship in the fleet to both survey it and clean out the pirates.   It seems counter-intuitive to put an unarmed or weakly armed ship in a combat situation needlessly.

Your armed surveyor is not weak, it will usually beat the pirates easily. It is overall stronger with double the hit points.

End of Franco's quote

Until it gets down to about half its original hull strength, then you need to take a break from beating up on pirates until it gets repaired.

Good point the game should let you clear out pirates without a survey ship. Besides why are pirates pushovers. Isn't that counter productive to the reason as to why have pirates in the first place.

The reason to have pirates right now is to make life hard for survey ships.  I am not sure why that is unclear to anyone.  It is the only thing they do.  As they develop the role of pirates, we will see what happens.  They promise something more complex and fleshed out. In the meantime, it is only a Survey action that will reveal hidden pirates.  No survey, no pirates.  We may find other ways to trigger pirates in the future.  Watch out and be careful!

I did detect the pirates via the survey action.  The problem is once I detected them, I was unable to clear them with a fleet because my fleet didn't have a survey ship.  Once the survey ship detects them they are no longer hidden and a fleet of ships should be able to clear them out.
