Patch 5.1 Survey priates event freezes game idle ship / idle shipyard button

The new (from patch 5) survey ship vrs 3 pirates event popup freezes the games no matter which of the 2 option buttons is pressed. The idle ship / idle shipyard button becomes grayed out but you can still move ships and skip ship orders (space bar) but as soon as the end turn / please wait message appears it freezes the game. The survey ship and pirate  ships become selectable on the map like a fleet (shown in picture below)
