Carrier Interceptors

I have been having a look around the forums the last few days but decided to make an account, so here is post numero uno.


I've already dumped a ton of hours playing the Beta and i'm sure i'll spend alot more time in the future, I just have a question if anyone could help. I have been playing with the ship designer quite alot recently and have created a pretty unique ship that I want to use as a carrier. I have created an interceptor design which follows a similar design to the carrier. The issue I have however, is that I can't get the carrier to use my interceptor design, it uses one of the default ones.

Does anyone know how make it so that your interceptor design is the one used by carriers?

It's probably the aspect of the carriers I'm most disappointed with.  I remember at least once in the dev stream that the idea that we could set what fighters were used was mooted by Paul and I hope that they do add this.  It would also be interesting to see how the battles balance out if you could set your carrier fighters up to be guardians rather than interceptors.

Thanks for your responses. I have probably exploited carriers being so overpowered at the minute but still, would be to have matching ships.

I imagine carrier fighters will have their own limitations and template to balance them, I too would like to see the feature but would also like to see it balanced. It seems the easiest way is to make a new class of ship for them.

You can sort of do this through modding, but not in-game. Paul has said that he is concerned that allowing players to design fighters would be really hard to balance.

I'm not sure I necessary buy that excuse.  I'm more inclined to suspect that it's more of a case that time is running out before launch and they're going for the easier solution, which is to take away control from the player and put in set parameters.  Shouldn't really be too upset about this though. In terms of the game as a whole there are far more important aspects that need completing and fixing.

Paul says the carrier system has been totally overhauled for B5.

I am not sure I understood what he said. I sounded like he was saying that the fighters on the carrier pods will be drones firing kinetics. He did not say the word kinetic but I am fairly certain he said guns. That may just be a slip of the tongue and he might be thinking guns firing lasers. Either way it sounds like the carrier pod fighters are going to be nerfed in B5 since he definitely seemed to draw a distinction between the carrier drones and other piloted ships like snipers.

I may be confused about the whole thing. I don't envy Paul trying to demo a game and answer random questions at the same time. The result for me is occasional difficulty in following what he is attempting to say. :)

Did anyone else get the same impression regarding carriers?

As I put in another thread.

Keep the components list fixed, but let people pick the hull look. That way they can keep fighters in their races theme while not damaging balance, it's a nice compromise.

Alternatively the fighters could be 'components' of the main carrier ship, or just have a box linked to it, that you click to customize.
