Can't select ships I create to build

Hey all, was hoping for some guidance. I have recently finally started tinkering with the ship builder. I wastrying to make an inexpensive colony ship. I create it, I save it, but it doaent show up in any list for building. is there some trick to building these?

Are you saving as a template? If so I believe your complete ship goes away and you basic ship without any weapons etc. is saved in new ship designs. For a ship to use on the fly iy is best not to save as template just name it and save it and it will be in the ship list
