Game is very dark + choppy

I successfully got the game running, but now I seem to be running into a different problem.

The whole game is very dark, so dark that I can't even see planets sometimes, and the brightness controls don't do anything even when they're turned all the way up.  Is this a known problem?  I included a screenshot, you can barely even see mercury.

NMy next question, everything seems to be running sort of ... choppy.  Especially the cinematics.  My computer exceeds the required specs for the game to my knowledge, is this an issue that other people are experiencing too?

Ok, well I tried switching to 1280x768 and no difference.  The brightness and contrast sliders have no effect, even at minimum and maximum values.  Has anyone else encountered this?  It carries over to the shipyard too, the game is almost impossible to play like this

I noticed this same issue.  I was wondering if it was just the way the game was supposed to be, but I thought it was fairly dark as well.  Also, when you zoom out, do the hex border lines in unexplored terroritoy vibrate and flash when you move the screen?

I did submit one, but haven't heard back yet, the person I spoke with said it might be a while.

I haven't had time to actually start a new game yet, but I will and see if it's still doing it

I haven't had a chance to start playing beta 5 yet.  Can you post whether or not you are still getting the dark screen?  We could have similar graphics drivers and cards?

been out of town, I'll try to start a new game tomorrow and let you know if it's still doing it
