Deleting Ship Templates

I created a few ship templates before I really knew what I was doing and now I have a bunch of junk templates I want to get rid of. The problem is I don't know how. I know this is probably a really dumb question but for the life of me I can't find where in the game to delete the template.

I even went into the designs folder under steamapps/galciv/etc. and saw all of the premade ship designs but did not find mine listed in there so I could delete it.

Any help on where to go to remove these would be awesome. Thanks much!

That's where they are for me, there are also a handful in the same path but /ships instead of /designs, not sure why.

I' m hoping they will add an in-game feature to delete and even save over existing templates like in the previous game.

That would be nice!  Peregrine, thanks for the help man, found the templates exactly where you said.

I'd also like to see that when you mark a ship as obsolete that it no longer shows you any of the upgraded versions of that same ship as you research techs. My finger is getting cramped from having to to click 10 versions of each type hip and hit obsolete.

Well, deleted the contents of the folder, but doesn't work. It still shows the templates, no matter what I do.

I basically looked in every possible folder on my computer already... (My Documents, Steam Folder, AppData,... everywhere) and still those damn templates show up even there's no physical file existing ANYWHERE. How is this even possible?

Hopefully they will add the in-game deleting of templates soon because until then I will basically avoid creating ships with the designer. It's just ridiculous currently.

I basically spent hours on creating different designs, but I can't delete the templates I no longer want which results in creating a lot of junk in the list but I can't avoid that because I can't finish designing a ship in one session. Sometimes I have to come back later or another day, so I have to save it somehow and each time I do save it as a template it creates another one I can't delete anymore.

And when I accidently forget to tick the template checkbox once all my work is basically gone because even it saved all the additional shipparts they don't show up anymore because it is built on a template without those parts. I don't even want to say how angry I'm getting when I waste hours of work just because basic save/delete/update features are NOT implemented.

I can't believe how some serious quality of life features are lacking. It's as if a new Windows version would ship without the ability to delete any files from your computer. It's just a ridiculous oversight.

I would like this as well as being able to delete parts grouped into a single saved part.

I figured out, right now, the best way to avoid lots of templates is to periodically save my ship design as draft 1, 2, 3, etc., but not as a template. That way when I'm finally done then I can click the template button.

There is an easy way to deal with this problem and that is to click on the windows icon         (you know where the entire screen is with whatever background you have on it.)     and write the name of the ship. ( find this sentence first. (Search in all programs and files.)      (if you remember what the ship name was there will be two files of. At least it was for me )   (below all programs and the icons above it)

Step 1 find the Windows icon in the background (depends on what type of software you use but most are the same anyway)

Step 2 type the Name of the ship in the. Search in all programs and files (above the icon)

Step 3 delete the two files with the same name as your ship.

(copy the files if there is more ships with the same name )

(make sure it the right one you want to delete as well make a new map where you can place the copied files in.

(so no mistakes are made if you have 3 ships with the same name as well check the space usage of the files if you did add more parts to it.)

Reccomend: testing in galciv 3 in order to confirm if it was delete as intended (if it was not you have a backup map/document with those files.)

Thanks for NOT reading the posts more detailed, because I'm sorry to tell you that this DOESN'T work.

I already searched my entire computer for the ships' name and deleted the files found in the "My Documents"-folder days ago like anybody with common sense would, but they STILL show up ingame without any physical file being located on my computer whatsoever.

I guess the problem must be related due to the fact I'm using Steam. Probably the game uses the crappy implementation of a Cloud Save mechanic from Steam nobody has control over and every time I start the game it will probably silently download the content from the Steam Cloud even I do not want that.

The fun fact is that any game using the Steam Cloud Save stuff normally creates a subfolder within Steam where Steam places everything it should synchronize or at least it creates a reference to the files. I have looked for such a folder belonging to GC3 and there is NO such folder. So if GC3 is using the Steam Cloud then it does so silently without ever creating any physical files on the harddisk which is just plain stupid because of how one doesn't have any control over the content stored to the Steam Cloud and if you don't know that in advance you fell for the trap and can't change it anymore.

And yeah I actually turned the Steam Cloud OFF already and the ship templates are STILL shown. I don't know what else to do about the problem anymore but it seems like the Devs from GC3 as well as Valve created a huge mess and it seems not to be one of their priorities to solve that.

I will probably create a support ticket for that issue, because it is really getting on my nerves already. I want that stuff deleted because it's cluttering up the designer and I HATE stuff like that.

I would also want the answer to this, I keep making changes to my designs and I want to change the templates that I originally made, as well, but I just want to take the best and greatest version to my new games, not every single version. The list is getting cluttered, it would also be useful to rename them from outside the game and I just don't know how to deal with the templates that doesn't ruin my on-going games. Tried deleting the designs, but it only causes more problems with my current games. There are also designs that don't appear in new games, and it makes no sense to my why this is so as I didn't equip the ships before saving a template and other ships of the same class appear in the new design templetate selection section.

Technically it has worked, but only for future saves. Your current save will, unfortunately, keep the template in storage somewhere in its own file system.

Each save keeps all data that's been used, as removing a template might otherwise damage ships which are currently using it. It's similar to if you start a game with a modded race, then delete the race - that race still exists in your save, but you won't be able to start a new game with it.

So far as I am aware there is no way to remove template clutter from an existing save at the present time.

Ah, this makes sense... the game would crash/behave weird if one would delete modded/custom stuff being used in the current game, so it saves a local copy of anything "custom" to the savegame, which can't be deleted without deleting the entire savegame.

Well knowing this it helps quite a lot. Just play a game with whatever race you like and to whatever techlevel you want and use it as "trashcan" for said race. :D

Once the main-menu shipdesigner is a thing (if it is still planned) it changes anyways.

Well it crashes anyway, if you remove them and start the save file that generated them again, you'll run into weird behaviour. I haven't figured out sistematically what happened in my case, but the ship icon was not displayed, even if the template was there and the game even crashed once while trying to select one of these old templates.

In conclusion, deleting designs is ok as long as you do it after you have finished playing a game - but this kind of defeats the purpose of this thread, we wanted to clean the template section, not start over 200h into a saved game.
