Planetary Resources

The best thing I have seen on the Dev Stream are the on-planet resources, I love it. I noticed that many (some) of the resources were on low quality planets. I assume that we must colonize the planets to get the resources. Since the resources can be very valuable, I'm wondering if we will have to go in blind or will there be a way to know the goodies are there before we colonize?

Yeah, I'm excited for them as well. Personally I hope you won't know about them until after you have colonized. I would even like events that make some of them appear long after you colonized. I like surprises. "During mining operations on a remote outpost your miners find a subterranean Snuggler colony! Free Snuggles for everyone!"

If you're going to hide them until after the colonization, you shouldn't make them too important, because you can't hunt for them.

You could also add a research item or an ideology to make these resources visible

I want them to be important, but I agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense to be required to colonize the low quality planet blindly to find them. A tech or something to reveal them is a good idea.

The AI has always colonized planets with no regard to quality and I love the idea of making them important when I have always pretty much ignored any planet below 8 pq.

On the other hand, being able to scan a planet ahead of time to see if there is a trade resource there could be incredibly powerful as it will also (presumably) tell you what bonus tiles a planet has.  This might not matter on low quality planets.  But on higher class planets it could be very valuable info indeed. As well as seeing tile placement ahead of time for the adjacency game.

I realize that people have clamored for the ability to see what a planet looks like before colonizing for, well, probably forever. Hell, I'd love it myself for obvious reasons. :p  But I reckon there must be a reason that it isn't implemented (even if it is only a coding concern).

The way I look at it, trade resources really are Super Bonus Tiles, that already have their bonus building on it.  But it still is a bonus.

Mind, I colonize all planets eventually (putting a lower priority on low class planets, but still colonizing them), so for me it's not that big of a deal.  But I think we might want to see the side-effects of knowing what planets have what trade resources on it from an implementation/balance POV.

Maybe the mouse over will tell you trade resources are there like they tell you about manufacturing/research/bountiful/etc

Perhaps it could be part of scanner tech.
