Diverse fleet or just the biggest ships?

Is there any incentive to diversify your fleet with ships of different sizes or is it best to just crank out the biggest ships you can make (as in Galciv 2)?

I'd personally prefer some incentive to have a mixed fleet (i.e carriers, battleships, cruisers, frigates) rather than just a fleet packed full of battleships.

There was some incentive to use a diversity of ships in GalCiv 2. There were ship modules that could boost the whole fleet, like attack or ship speed. So there was incentive to try to include ships that had said modules into the fleets. Otherwise, you should try to go big (larger ships have advantages that smaller ships don't).

GalCiv 3 might get some improvements to tactical combat that might change things, but we'll have to wait and see. For the record, we won't be able to control tactical combat, but the battles do consider things like ship ranges and ship speed, not just firepower and defenses.

A lot of the answer to your question depends on what they do with the AI during the next few months. Brad has made some comments about wanting diverse ships in fleets in the past. Since he and his assistant AI developer are only just getting started on the "real" AI, it all depends on how inventive they are. I expect it to be quite challenging.
