What does this do?

When you go into design your ships from scratch or use a templet, you can assign its role. Do we have any data on HOW this affects combat?

For example I can make a large hull a 'Capital' class on one design..What does that do?

I can also assign it Assault or support....again how does its designation affect its role or use in combat?

I am wondering if this represents some way to filter your fleet list, but I haven't figured out how.   Perhaps it is YAPH or YAWIP or both.  LoL.

That's interesting, perhaps some indication of some AI work for custom empire ships, as well as AI governors for you in larger games?

Or

It's related to the combat viewer?

different ship types have different wireframe models on the zoomed out menu I believe.  I'm not sure if it does anything else given the contents of StrategicIconDefs.xml

If you want to see exactly what these roles do, check BattleBehaviorDefs.xml. They effect the starting position of the ships as well as what they target and what targets them. I'm pretty sure this matters under the hood currently and will be clear how it effects battle once we get the viewer.

Since the battle viewer isn't available yet, and based on some of the hints the devs gave out during the Alpha, I would have to guess that these are some of the things that will be used in the battle viewer.

This could be a viable way to add different types of antimatter abilities like in SOASE for different kinds of ships when leveling up. Antimatter abilities for custom ships would be nice. Just an idea.
