Starbases, Invasion and bombing, tech

Hi,

Although I like ship yard, I have found all I have to do is post a ship in a system and blow it up each time the planet rebuilds it. They cannot produce any ships! Game is over at that point. I just have to research invasion tech. There should be a way to still build ships without star bases???? Maybe only require it for capital ships? Have the ship yard also increase the speed of ships built if you have one??? Just some ideas.

It seems like the invasion tech is late in the game. It seemed that way in galciv 2 as well. I would love a way to start bombing planets before then with spaceships. Just seems to me like that if you had a space ship in a system, you could start bombing it, not needing the invasion tech. As a defense, have some ground based defenses against bombing, :) ion cannons?

I am not sure about the amount of tech. I usually play galciv 2 on smaller maps, not tiny, with fast tech research. Maybe since it is normal speed for tech research, it seems much slower. Having lots of tech options does mean you usually don't run out before the end of the game, but some techs take a long time to get to some techs. Example, it takes several techs to get to the first guns/beams/missiles or defenses.

I love the game. Thanks.

I spend the first 50 turns attempting to increase my ship speed, range, commence, farm, xeno manufacturingtranslator. I hold off until I encounter another race and simply trade for weapons adding 38 credits to sweeten the pot.

I guess once Pirates are added I may need to change my priority. :)

Seems silly for any race not to have some type of weaponry or defense at the beginning of a game let along planetary defense. (what ever happen to Earths nuclear arsenal?) Heck survey ships can't be built off the bat. Which seems odd. Voyager probe is laughing at us from deep space!

End of quote

Actually you get the first level weapons all from a single tech that can be researched on turn one. Same with defenses.

Sorry, I checked and you are right. I was assuming that you did not get any until you researched beam, missile, or projectile tech. Thanks.

Well this kind of don't make what you are basically asking for is two star bases since star bases can move. One solution is let you arm star bases, and a star base should have feasible defence. Another solution is build defenders for the star base. This request makes sense if the star base couldn't move. At least in scify you couldn't build ships bigger than tiny hulls. Is voyager Paris builds a shuttle. In battlestar Galactica, both old and new they were built. Starbuck builds a viper in the new one. In Galactica 1980 the gave Starbucks son a small heavily armed ship. These are tiny hull ships. One thing you have to remember because you are a ship and not a star base you are not supplied for this. Repairing a bigger ship is another story. The only thing I might be concerned with is a ai that can't play this. I hope the game will build ships to defend it's star bases. Just a couple of opinions. Comment as you wish. I guess there should be a tech where on large hulls or bigger ships you could have a module that will only go on big ships that can build tiny hull ships. This should be difficult to do though.

2 ship yards - Not really. Just that you would be able to build ships from the planet until a ship yard was built. After that it moves to the ship yard and building speed is increased. However, if the ship yard was destroyed, it would revert to the planet, at a reduced building speed and maybe limited on ship size. That way, you may still have a chance if someone parked a ship near your planet. May or may not work.

This is a concern definitely.

You could make the AI try to haggle for peace at the point of having no shipyards, this is a valuable observation in it's concerns for when to offer a peace treaty. Also a MASSIVE concern in what it needs to defend, and prioritize for defensive actions.

Of course if the player doesn't want peace, what can the AI do with 0 shipyards. Well it can prioritize trading for ships with other races.

I also wouldn't be against a minor race group called mercenaries (or just use the pirate group I suggested before), whereby you can pay them to engage in wars you are engaged in, they have a temporary alliance with you or the the AI while you are at war and paying them. The alliance would cancel when you come out of wars, and/or don't pay them

Even just a button the AI can use called pay mercenaries, no group attached, so if it is ever in this situation it can pay some rogue ships to try and lift a blockade or defend a certain starsystem long enough for it to get a shipyard up.
