Front of the ship

How do you set the stem and stern of your ships? I'm generally happy with the appearance of my ships (except I want to add blinking lights), but when I set them in motion they don't seem to have a front or back regardless of where I place the engines.

thanks,

The origin (cube) determines the orientation of the ship.

When you place it (by selecting a hull size), the side of the cube that is front left-facing is the stem-side (front) of the ship, the side of the cube that is front-right facing is the ship port-side, and the upward facing side it the ship top-side.

Drop an engine on your ship design, it lets me know which way my ship is position. I tend to get confused when designing from the starting cube especially when I turn and twist during building from scratch.

To both answers: that's what I expected, but not what happened. In my design, I decided to spin my ships for Gravity. The  rotating axels are running left to right with the left axel being the "front". The engines are on the right end, being the "rear". The ship just kind of "wobbles" towards it destination.

Once you place the origin (cube) its sides determine the orientation of the ship. The best way to keep track of the ship orientation is to immediately attach two dummy parts to the cube (and give them an offset away from the cube). This allows you to see which way is which.

And because of the hex grid map, any wobble during flight is to be expected, but its stem should always be (roughly) pointing toward the destination. If you fly by hand (eg manually 1 tile at a time) the ship should rotate toward the destination tile, but should fly nose first.

I have a couple of times built a ship I really liked, only to find I had built it facing backwards. Some indication within the designer of the orientation of your ship would be very helpful.
