Combat Viewer Preview?

The points in Friday's Dev Stream about testers doing Let's Plays with a potentially ugly combat viewer are, I think, good ones. And I'm totally in support of Stardock keeping it out of an actual beta release until it's good to go.

But if the devs know it looks ugly, then it must look like SOMETHING, which means that it's possible to put up a video of it. Could we see one? It could be edited for beauty if you're THAT worried about negative pre-release reviews.

Personally, I don't want to see it until it's great.

The whole reason they aren't giving it too us is they don't want people to see it until their happy with it. So showing us would completely defeat the purpose of waiting.

I dispute that. The reason, IIRC from the last live stream, was that potentially negative feedback from let's plays, twitch streams, &c. could turn into negative press and negative sales. I agree with that and that's why I don't support inclusion in a beta build until it's ready.

HOWEVER, a well-edited video of the combat viewer with large fleets (and maybe the winning starship design?) might generate some decent hype. And this I would support.

Heck with the Combat Viewer preview ... can we get a preview of a ship blowing up?

Say, a Ship Designer Contest winning ship  .  The Klongins have boarded, and we must engage self-destruct.  Make it blow.

I don't think they should show us the bad viewer until the game is released with the good one. Then it would be interesting if Brad goes back and show us some of the stuff looked like while being developed and have like a before and after. Would be interesting.

In the old days, we would have released it with Beta 3.  But in the era of Let's plays, we dare not put something into the beta that is visually ugly even if it's functional.

Even as is, people widely reported galCiv III looking like GalCiv II because we were using some hold over artwork for the first beta.  It's better to just wait until it's more presentable.

People being people, it's a very good idea. Despite all the warnings and postings that it's still a work in progress, many people tend to ignore, be ignorant, or just could care less and just rip you a new one for something that won't even be in the release... So, regardless of my massive impatience to see and play with this feature, I'm all for holding off on its' release until YOU guys are happy with it.
