First Impressions

I have played about 150 turns with the Yor and here are some very early impressions from .60

1) Many tool-tip boxes are too small for their text with no scroll. This is a little thing, but becomes surprisingly annoying because it comes up so often.

2) Event videos for "First ____" were all very choppy.

3) Experienced noticeable lag when doing even simple tasks in the ship designer.

4) In govern planet window, the word "Manufacturing" overlaps the % text.

5) Showing food on Yor planets is very confusing. If there is any way to replace it with the Yor population cap for the planet it would be a great QoL improvement for them.

6) When attacking a fleet orbiting a planet, the defending fleet's stats do not display correctly in the battle preview window.

7) AI vastly undervalues tech when trading for credits. It is very easy to buy out all techs from other civs.

8) Mouse-over of other UP members bars tells you their % of votes, but this same information isn't available for yourself from within the UP window.

9) AI still a long way off, but starting to do smart things like defending planets, starbases, and shipyards.

10) Yor ships are the best looking yet. If things keep going this way, the Iridium and possibly the Alterians may need a second pass on their ships to keep them up to snuff with the other civs.

11) The Yor are super fun. Their growth mechanic synergizes very well with the new approval mechanic. They take a bit more macro, but I found it fun to keep fiddling around to optimize growth vs. production.

12) Hard to say yet, but I think Yor might be a little OP right now. Their ability to grow small planets very quickly makes them a powerhouse toward the end of planet rush.

13) The Yor only need to devote the smallest amount of manufacturing to Assembly to grow at .2/turn. This means they can make good money or put out tons of research while growing.

14) New approval is simpler, but also more sterile. The old system was confusing and needed tweaking, but the fact that it was much more difficult to game meant it felt less like managing a spreadsheet than the current version.

I've just scratched the surface of the new build, but it is clearly a nice step forward. The game feels much more like a complete game in this iteration, and it looks and sounds great. The Yor are tons of fun to play and add a lot of character to the game. I really hope they are encouraged to do something this distinct with at least one of the final two races. It is amazing how much distinct factions can do to add life to 4X.

My experience is different for

2) events didn't seem choppy to me.

3) didn't see lag in designer;  maybe i didnt get far enough into it.

12)  I agree it's hard to say because between beta 2 and 3 strategies for the different races are going to change noticeably...I think (of course I have only played a couple hundred turns!)

13)  The amount of Yor growth seems to be a step function...I went from 0.0 to 0.2 to 0.4 etc depending on social slider and total manufacturing.    Seems like it ought to be a smooth curve, gradually getting less efficient (my guess).

I agree that distinct races add a lot to the game.   I would also point out the obvious, that for each race having playable distinct strategies is also huge.   But of course it is very difficult, which is why there aren't so many great 4x games.   A game that forces a cookie cutter approach isn't much fun once you figure it out.

I also agree that this build is a big positive step.   Really fun to see the game growing.

Huge improvement in the game aspect. The AI is more feisty and war appears to be inevitable or at least it will take a lot of skill to avoid. This is as it should be imo.

I) Yes, the mouse over text problems are annoying, but understandable for a beta I suppose.

I am still having some problems understanding the Yor population growth and several things seem contrary to a non-organic species. Showing food as the OP mentioned and soil enhancement for instance, but I guess they could grow food for export. Anyway, I'll figure it out.

7) Trading is easy but I need to play at various levels before I declare any undervalue. They may undervalue their wealth. When I have stripped their tech they were at < 300 credits. I like the feature that tells you how much it will take to make the deal. I have yet to have the AI ask me for a trade. I would like to see that.

Most of the cut scenes were okay for me. The planetary event scenes are quite good, for the most part. The first colony scene is unimpressive and seems almost identical (maybe less) than GCII. The first anomaly scene is not good. I could be eliminated without harm but it should be improved or cut. The game could use some voice overs to go with the cut scenes. This is certainly not a deal breaker and I can see how it might cost too much to add but it would be nice.

I used the ship designer a lot more in playing this beta. The AI seems to be more clever in planning the offense and defense it will use. I had grown accustomed to the AI coming out with missiles and shields and now they seem a bit more unpredictable.

The visual part of battle auto resolution seems a little buggy. A few times it seemed to work and other times the ships just disappeared. I wish that the game would auto zoom to auto resolution. I tend to play zoomed out a lot and I was not able to zoom in quick enough to see what was happening when I was attacked.

Is there a keyboard method to rotate the ships? I still have some difficulty rotating using the mouse center button.
