starting ships

I know some people like a quick start in exploring. But, how can you have 3 ships to begin with and have no technology to go with them. Maybe an option to start without them.

No technology?  You have the first generation hyperdrive, life support and sensor technology.  Just because you don't have weapons doesn't mean you have no tech.
