Developer Reactions to New Steam Discovery Tools, Including Stardock's Derek Paxton

Stardock’s Derek Paxton gives reaction to the new Steam Discovery tools to Gamasutra.

"Stardock's Derek Paxton isn't completely sold on the new storefront, although he does appreciate that Valve is looking for new and effective ways to curate games on the platform.

He notes that the Top Seller tab isn't as useful as it was before the update. Galactic Civilizations III is currently on sale on Steam, and while 45 percent of pageviews are coming from the Specials tab, a mere 0.01 percent are coming from the Top Sellers tab, even though the game was at once point in each list.

I have to agree.  I'm not sure what Steam is doing is good for the little guy.

The curators do nothing for me, though I suspect they'd do something for folks who don't have a lot of time to look at stuff.

I suspect I'm going to miss out on a couple of games I'd normally buy due to this.

It's too messy, neat and clean storefronts are better than horribly cluttered ones, Steam's cluttered now.

Use this if you don't want to give Gamasutra clicks:

I used to look at new releases every day. Heck, I even looked at recently updated if I was feeling it. Now I don't even visit the store anymore. This is definitely something that needs to evolve over time. Problems for me: I don't have a single well-known media personality that I agree with on things. I don't have a lot of friends on Steam, so my recommendations are just repetitive. And I can't help but notice that cancerous shit like this curator is already making its way to the top.

What I would like: based on my games, time played, and even how I reviewed games (if I did so), I would like curators suggested to me that shared my opinions. "But how will you then discover the new gems?" I hear you asking. That's not my immediate concern. First I want a list with games that are similar to the ones I play, because those are the ones I enjoy playing.

There's an episode of The Office where Kevin suggests putting the chocolate chip cookies, the best selling cookies, on D4, right in the middle.

some of the recommendations are weird. i have some f2p mmo in my lib (dcuo, etc) already and they put those same games on the "more" recommendation list down at the bottom...

wish there was a way to make the new storefront optional, and keep the old format.

The change sure made the Steam frontpage ALOT busier!   It looks better and I think it's better but I'll have a better verdict soon enough.

What's wrong with him? (Except that he types "hodor" about every single game).

Reviews should be informative, with as little biased and uninformative "I like this crap" as possible.  After translating retard speak into "I like this crap" you're still left with an utterly non-descriptive steaming pile of shit for a review.

Aaah I didn't see at first that it was reviews!   Now I understand  X|

Yeah, it was one of six curators suggested by Steam. A lot of steam player reviews already consist of one-liners or inside jokes that are completely useless to someone seeking opinions or information about a game. And yet those will be the "reviews" that "most people found helpful". Basically shit floating to the top.
