Idea for an expansion: Ancient Races

Last time on the dev stream Paul talked about the possibility of two "United Planets" on larger maps. This got me thinking about how "Elemental 2015" is supposedly implementing asymetric gameplay and if something similiar might be possible further down the road for "Gal Civ 3".

My idea would be to introduce two or three ancient and very powerful races, ike the dread lords in an expansion. They would have highly advanced technologies but theit goal would not be to dominate the younger races through conquest but to defeat the other ancient races by forming a coalition with several younger ones. Theese coalitions would then take the place of the regular UP and devide the galaxy in a battle between the ancients and their supporters.

Your goal when playing as one of the powerful races would be to manipulate the other races in either siding with you or waging war against each other, to ultimatly defeat the other "ancient races" and their vassals.

As a younger race you would have to weigh your options. Do you side with one of the ancients, or form an alliance of your own to defeat them. Hell you could even find some "minor" ancients to help you in your fight.

If anyone watched "Babylon 5", this would be just like the war between the Schadows and the Vorlons and would give the game a new and interesting spin IMHO.

Of course this specific game mode would be an option you could choose when you set up a new game.

What do you guys think about somethink like this? Too convoluted or a possibility? Would love to hear from the dev's too.

Would definitely open up another victory path. I like it.

A good idea    All I'm gonna say is "GET OUT OF OUR GALAXY!" lol

Yes, that's an interesting idea.

However, there is a slight problem with it: The Dread Lords/Arnor were the oldest and most powerful race. The second oldest race (and the first of the "younger" races to achieve sentience) are the Iconians. This is a major part of the lore. Adding in new ancient (i.e. older than the Iconians) and powerful races would be a huge retcon.

The only way I could see this work is to either make those ancient races come from another dimension (sort of like the Thalan), or to use one of the younger races who somehow managed to gain access to incredible power (like the First Fleet of the Terrans, who spend the last years in the pocket universe wherein the Dread Lords were imprisoned, studying the leftover artefacts).

Or you could have a unknown race come out of nowhere (perhaps they recieved the hyperdrive plans and kept their heads down while the events of GC2 were going on and are now taking to the galactic stage so to speak?) You could have a back story explaining why the dark yor broke away from the yor? The Drengin could have sheltered some survivors of the xendar and now they've grown in numbers and are aching for revenge on the terrans? the options are massive.

Something like The Last Federation? Seems interesting, but only the devs would know if it's feasible. As Gaunathor mentioned in terms of ancient civilizations there are only the Arnor and Dread Lords. Of course there are also the Mithrilar, namely Draginol and Mascrinthus,

Hmmm... I cycled through many maps to have the torian and drengin close and the yor and iconian. I wanted to have them go to war and it would make the map feel more alive. So I would want some races to be in perma war for the fun of it. :)

I like the idea maybe this could be a scenario map like the milky way was.

Talking of minor races being made into majors, the Scottlingas do quite well in my games.I might turn them into a custom race just to see how they get on?

Also with the Iridium coming into the game it prove that as long as you dont clash with the precursorlore the sky's the limit as to creating new races?

Yes it does appear to be the plot of B5.
