Race specific weapons and weapon models

I think it would be nice if there were weapons unique to certain races. Paul said something about special support modules for ships and this got me thinking that there might be a place for race specific weapons.

 

The other thing i noticed while designing my ships is, that every race currently uses the same weapon models. I know that it can be a lot of work to create new models for every race, but there are already unique shipparts for every race and weapon models in line with the different art styles, combined with race specific weapons will  help to diversify them further.

 

Maybe even have different animations depending on who uses them. For example lasers fired by a Human ship would look different than the ones fired by Altarians etc.

It would be nice if each race had its own weapon style. As for unique weapons, it sounds nice but increases the balance problems that the game sometimes has. I think some support modules being unique is a more reasoned approach. That way you could have a more diverse approach. Drengin and other evil beings could have something that could enhance weapons in some way, while Altarians and other good races could have something the enhances defenses. Terran and the pragmatic/neutral could have modules that enhance speed/range/hps and the like. Of course, this could also go into the ideology trees as well.

We will have some race spastic weapons, but we want them to be special, not just "Terran get this instead of this"

that said the base weapons will still be available to all races.

that would require 8 models for each weapon, 8 texture maps and 8 copies of the xml code times every weapon about (20?)

Glad to hear that! Of course each race still needs access to the basic weapons, but could they be further diversified by special weapon augments? 

In the current build you can research that missiles take up less space. Could something like this be further broken down and made only available to specific races? E.g. Drengin can research an augment that allows for more kinetic weapons to be installed on their ships.

I think he means bonuses will be different for them, like damage, damage increases to off defenses, range, accuracy, rate of fire, penetration, mass, and cost. It would be nice to have race specific life support and hulls and evermore improvements bit that would make tech trading difficult.

Well, if I could choose I would prefer different weapon models with different animations and different stats for each race. But that would be a lot of balancing and animation/modeling work.

Combat is not even completely implemented yet, so I'm just throwing around ideas.

Non, all that is standard with every weapon. And we just heard there will be SPECIAL. Race specific weapons and defenses.

You could address the model part issue yourself in the ship editor by scaling and combining parts and placing it so it covers the real weapon model :-)

I believe we are getting the functionality to export new parts by combining old parts, aren't we?
