DARCA1213's Honest Opinion for version 0.41

Sega beta ;-)

Its looking good but something's just feel off so I'll number them like I always have:

1. I've said this before, the rest global spending button NEEDS a warning OR TWO, pressing that by accident will REALLY TOTALLY screw up a large empire and take a long time to fix.

2. The tech category titles have changed again and I thought of a great idea for them. Why not name each category after each of the 4X's! It could work. ;)

3. I like the paragraph for planets bone s tiles but when I move the mouse over the icon I want to see the bonus it gives not just a description.

4. I like that the edges on the planets screen aren't jagged anymore, it looks cleaner now.

5. I miss the way population was done in billions, it was a classic and loved. Come on! Bring it back it wasn't hurting anyone and it actually felt like I was leading people and not unknown integers.

Although you don't like it, at least give us the option to have it. Please!

6. I think there should be a sixth level in the ideology "pyramid". It would be available after all other perks were purchased and there would be just one super special thing.

7. Clicking on a shipyard in the starbases list should open up that shipyards screen just like planets.

8. Why can't I buy multiple things in the queue at once? I can only build one thing a turn on a planet, (which should change) it would only keep me from going back to it again and save myself time.

9. When scrolling over a shipyard i NEED to see how many turns something is to completion along with what ship is being built. So right now you guys got it half right. :) clicking is bad on large maps.

10. The left side of the planet screen has some empty space. How about putting some shipyard info or governor stuff there to fill the gap?

11. The planets of every system look amazing. They are like really good.and you know its true when I use the word "really". ;)

12. Something is...off with the ship graphics. Are they still bringing worked on, if so tell me more layers are coming on so the parts don't look like plastic. Especially Terran model 105. Over all the colors need more contrast in direct light, that's when it looks the worst. Make it so.

13. Its nice every planet has a ice cap/pole but suns all have a singular color at the north pole about the same size and shape as earths. And there's this odd tiny circular dot on top of every sun, it's likely some sorta programming thing but it shouldn't be there and suns shouldn't have poles look the way they do. IMHO.

14. At first I don't understand why you changed the shipyard tab to just "Designer" but I guess it would sound redundant, so ok. But I think there might still be a better name out there. ;)

15. Ideology choices still suck. People try to think long term in games like this but always getting the worst part of a deal on events will make alot of people not go down the benevolent path even if it is the best out of the three.

16. Fyi, approval is at 96% on earth with -5% from population pressure and +2% from planetary wealth for a total of -4%. Do the math.

17. I suck at games like this. I really do. For some reason I just take a long time to finish techs and balance stuff. I just took me 14 turns to complete Xeno commerce. But I still love playing. So that means the beta is fun. Congratulations SD.

more stuff later, I hope this helps you.

The names are different for each race; but for one, maybe the Yor, I can see that being a nice little joke.

I Disagree. I think they are much better balanced with there usually no longer being an obvious "best" choice.

The first 2-3 I came across were bad for benevolent by far. Maybe it was luck of the draw.

2. Actually that's a typo I'll fix that.

I wouldn't be surprised, if all 4 categories would be called "Exterminate!" in the Yor tech tree. :cylon:

Wow the tech tree is the best I've ever seen, really great stuff. I can't see many problems with it but I still have stuff to say in the form of a list, in no particular order:

1. Galactic Cruise Lines "port of call" sounds like a 10% increase to tourism is small for a cruise line. Make it more.

2. I like that some of the more aggressive techs get a red border like targeting assist it gives it a a warfare tactical feel to techs like that.

3. Can we get a tech that will make convincing other races to declare war on each other easier? Please. :pout: }:)

4. Political parties would be sprinkles right now on this delicious ice cream of a tech tree. Please bring them back.

5. I think the weapons are balanced for the late game and are very tactical and distinct, especially when combat features come into play soon. But can combat work if the defense counterparts are are smaller and better?.

(6. When reloading the game suns and black holes don't show up still. Do I need to research a tech to see them?. Lol)

6. Defense Network (a starbase module) has a typo. "Boost the attack and defense or all near BAY ships" should be by ships.

7. As you may know all of the defense specialization techs make things more expensive via +% of a bonus instead of -%.

Over all I can't complain, its a really good tech tree and its hard to find bad stuff in it.

That will most likely be an ability (like Super Manipulator in GalCiv 2).

Actually, that should be "nearby".

Approval:

1. Population pressure is good and the -50% at full capacity is fair. Since planets need population to be a asset to our empires and typically fill up pretty fast, ways to alleviate the negative morale need to be available a bit earlier in the game.

2. Having military ships in orbit should increase approval.

3. It would be nice to see approval change in the governors wheel so I don't have to go back and forth twice. And see its bonuses too.

4. Planetary wealth needs a readjustment. I think I need one post nt per billion but that's difficult on low class research worlds and it generally sucks overall regardless.

5. I APPROVE OF THE FRIGIN AWESOME SHIP DESIGNER. OMGOSH IT'S PERFECT. (why did I use caps?) (and I can't move parts I placed btw, but its still really good.)

other than that I'm fine with the penalties and stuff...

End of DARCA1213's quote

You can't move parts after you place them? Are you selecting the part then going to the offset tab, and moving the X, Y, or Z sliders?

You could also turn on the doodads then select the offset tab below to move the part after you place it.

Offset isn't the same as moving it to a different hardpoint.

Ah, that clarifies it ;) I thought you didn't know how to move the piece vs. moving the piece to another hardpoint.

I agree that hardpoint movement would be rather nice, but I think with the offset tool we can get things good enough. :)

Colonization settings and map stuff, in no particular order:

1. On a tiny map with everything abundant causes virtually no habitable planets to spawn. Something similar was observed in galciv2.

2. On a tiny map the starting scout can almost go anywhere on the map. ( 50%) so less life support or something should be done to give the LS techs some worth on small maps.

3. Maybe, tiles on the far left of a planet can still be adjacent to tiles on the far right?

4. Something needs to happen when getting a ideology perk. It should be like getting a tech, instead its not even noticeable. Consider making it more of a achievement and fun like a animation or description of something.

5. Game takes to long to load, this is the future things should be fast when loading a small little map.

6. With so many events with natives and old dead valuable stuff, a pattern from galciv2, will we eventually see a race or two come in the game with this theme?

7. When in the tactical zoom (far out) and a ship is idle next to another identical ship, its hard to tell them apart. Using a bit of logic after a second or two its no longer a problem and I give orders again like normal. But there should be a glow or something to define the ship in question to avoid this minor yet baffling problem.

8. I want to be able to force ships into/near black holes. I think this is a path finding or programming problem but can you try to make it work so I can occasionally save tiles and maybe just maybe kamakazi a ship or two into them. :)

9. Elerium* spawned in a nebula and was impossible to see without zooming out.

(I haven't watched the live streams in a while so I might repeat stuff...but then again, that would just show my genius! )

Why can't we use production to upgrade ships.

Why are we still in perma war?

Why aren't there people in the MP lobby, I want to beat someone!

Why?!?!?

This is a good idea, you should be able to dock a ship in a shipyard and upgrade it using your manufacturing. Or maybe use a constructor to upgrade a ship?

Because without diplomacy it's perma war or never war.

Hey a...unlocked improvements like the Xeno factory and the xeno research laboratory don't show up when reloading the game, and possibly don't show up to be built at all unless the basic versions are there to upgrade on the same tiles. Fyi.

I'm surprised being the first to say this.

But otherwise the beta is pretty good, bit... off though.

This is feature, They talked about it in the streams.

Me no watchy streams :p

They mentioned that the most efficient way to build is to build each level on the way, so they made that happen automatically to reduce micro. I think they should change the "all" tab under available improvements to something like "current" and make "all" show the upgraded versions as well. That way, not only can you see what you'll eventually end up with, but if want to rush-buy a later improvement, or if you can build a later improvement in 1 turn, you have that option. Another way to go that might be cleaner would be to give each improvement a menu on right-click that would allow you to see and select all researched iterations, and maybe even see the one you haven't researched yet.

That's stupid. If I understand you, they think going to a planet twice for one improvement is reducing micromanagement?

Bottom line I can't build the improvements I researched and its slowing me down and everyone.

Because of auto-upgrade you will build your highest level version without having to return to the planet screen. That said, there should be a way to go straight to the highest-level version.

If they switch it they will add the production cost of all the previous buildings to the last one in the chain, so it would be the same amount of time anyway (or even slower if you are building a production improving one).

But, if they don't change the production time on the last one as mentioned above, then there is some slowness added to the game when one builds these other buildings.

They are playing with these ideas, and if they change it and make the production values so ridiculously high, then the slower build up from each one is far more effective since they give you bonuses as you are building up to the largest factory. Having the bonuses sooner than later are probably better in the long run anyway.
