Why not allow us to obsolete ship types we created?

I can understand why deleting a ship type provided by the game is a bad idea, but why can't we obsolete ships we designed instead of deleting them? I want to keep them for later games but get them out of my current list of buildable ships.

sounds like you want to save ship designs just like you save games/pictures etc. Any type of file.
