Suggestion - Stargates, and racial bonuses

Games and shows in space have been using these for a long time.  There was a game we used to play PBEM called Stars! , that offered quite a bit for a game that was released  on one floppy.  It still has a rather loyal following of a few thousand players.

The way Stars! handled stargates, offered some interesting choices when designing your race, and playing.

There were a variety of stargates that could be built on a starbase.   Some races had better stargate tech than others, but there were two primary factors of a stargate.

1.  size of ships that could travel through it.

2.  distance it could transport ships.

One particular racial super ability was that their stargates were always better.  Either able to take bigger ships, or farther. depending on the tech.  They  were also the only race with the infinite/infinite gate.

I think for this game, it could require a planet to be donating resources to power the gate, the same way they power space docks?   Lastly, they allowed for a defensive fleet (something that was always very challenging in galciv 2, in any iteration}.   There could also be a rather heavy resource cost to moving a ship through a gate, if it seemed appropriate.

Stargates are a part of the backstory for GalCiv. They are no longer used, because hyperdrive made them obsolete. The primary reason for this is, that, unlike in other games and popular fiction, stargates in GalCiv do not work instantaneously. In fact, they are much slower than hyperdrive.

However, there apparently exists a much more advanced stargate-variant called "hypergate". Based on a post by Mormegil, we may see them in the future.

Whatever they end up being called,  it would be a huge tactical addition to the game.

I believe in one of the live streams they are considering adding "stargates" to allow travel from one point to another quickly! Although you will still have to travel the distance you require to build both stargates!

I know we have all talked about Stargates and Hypergates? But what if there is some kind of Jumpstation?

Rather than taking a ship from point A to point B what if a Jumpgate or Jumpstation wildly accelerated a ship passing through its field of effect?

Basically if the path of a ship went through the field it would reduce the amount of spaces dramatically to reach a distant point. Almost like those flashing arrows in a race-car video game. The amount of acceleration would increase due to the amount of tiles a ship is traveling through before reaching the field (basically it wouldn't work if you were starting in the field itself).

If you were 1 tile in front of the field it would work slightly - however if your ship plotted out, say 12 or 20 tiles before entering the field/station, it would slingshot your ship ahead either the same amount of tiles you plotted before beginning your initial move. This would mean your entry into the field could not be interrupted between turns. I am sure there could be other simpler variations.

I am at war with the Terrans and all my starship are on the other side of the map. Something like this would be useful to fling all my attack ships in the direction of my war because it takes so long for them to arrive normally... This way at least it would not be instantaneous travel.

I hope that made sense :P
