3D Printing ship designs?

As I was designing a ship in the new ship builder, I thought to myself "a 3D printed version of this would be pretty cool". I doubt I'm the only one, but I hadn't seen anything posted yet so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Would it be possible to export ship designs from the designer in a format that could be fed to a 3D printer?

It would be possible to export as a standard model format im guessing. But most 3D printers have their own propriety modeling system. So model export im assuming yes, conversion would be up to 3D printer manufacturer

We plan to let you export your ships to a 3D printable format, this proves to have a few more challenges than we would like, but it is a planned feature. 

We already got a 3D Printer so we can test it, in house. So i for one am very excited about it. :)

Still, what about papercraft? Not everyone has 3D printer, and I doubt my superiors will be happy if I start printing my "crusade fleet". :D Besides, you'll be doing papercraft with your own hands, not just watching printer making it.

P.S. Any plans going scale (including die-cast) model market?

While I love this idea I have 0 ( none , nada, zip, zilch ) artistic ability and couldn't design I ship if my life depended on it. 

Most of the time in gc2 I just took a standees template threw a few weapons on and said done. Which is sad cause I'd really like to see cool ships I just can't make them myself
