Ships may move (and map) beyond max range if destination hex is within range. When wedge shaped area is beyond ship range, ships may be ordered to move to safe hex on far side of wedge, even if path takes it deep into beyond range area
a short jaunt across the edge should be allowable not clickable but a ship could go there
i mean if it starts and ends its turn on safe areas it should be allowed
Survey ship, when placed on auto survey will seek go to nearest anomaly, even if said anomaly is hidden in unexplored hex.
just tested this if a survey ship cant detect a new anomaly it uses the explore command and explores the nearest unexplored hex until an anomaly shows up
however it uses all its move actions towards explore before checking if an anomaly shows up
if it did not work like this, taking a wormhole to the other side of the galaxy could have game breaking consequences.
i believe in galciv II that the ship would often make a beeline home before continuing to survey while in three it continues to survey and if it cant it heads home i could be wrong though
what would be interesting would be a lost ability for ships
a lost ship would be any ship that is too far outside of your range it would no longer be able to communicate with your empire and so you would not be able to see it, it would try and get home to the best of its ability and once back in your range you would upload the area's it had explored, if it gets destroyed you would never know.
further this could be applied to ships traveling through nebula's and at the end of each turn in the nebula the ship would have a chance to change direction until a ship came out the other side
a large nebula could have fleets traveling around for dozens of turns completely lost
