Capturing starbases, starships, mining outposts, etc

Capturing starbases, starships, mining outposts, etc

I think it would be nice if it would be possible to capture enemy starbases, even starships, mining outposts and possible other player owned objects in outer space as is possible with planets. Maybe by having some kind of special commando module or something like that. And then there should be a way to defend yourself from that.

The starbases would be the best example, there is no need to destroy it if you could repurpose it for yourself. Some modules could be destroyed during battle and starbase could be self-destructed before capture, possibilities are numerous.

To make, for example, capturing starbases work they maybe would have to be made more expensive to build to have a reason to go through the hassle of capturing one.

But you bring up a really good point, which is that the borders of this game aren't political borders in the same sense as most 4x games. They grand you no rights to the territory. Others can freely pass through, settle and build there. They really represent the area where your culture is dominant, your only real control is over the planets you settle and the star bases you build.

They are treated as political borders now, apparently. Trespassing in foreign territory causes diplomatic penalties, according to what Mormegil said here. Also, there are Open/Close Border treaties in the files.

Really makes me wonder how certain cases will be treated. Like, for example, you have colonised some planets, and they get enveloped by foreign influence later. Will the other race now get pissed at you for "trespassing"?

Starbases, in my view, are state-owned and operated.

It would be much more interesting and 'alive' if private sector trading vessels plied the spacelanes and corporations built and owned space ports. Governments contract all the time with private entities and it seems like this would make for a very interesting and deep addition to the game.

I would think it depends on the social structure of the race you are playing for some races spaceports might be privatley owned and in others run directly by the state in other systems they may be run by a feudal lord.

Actually one interesting thing they could do is have rogue space ports owned by pirates peoducing their own ships and siphoning money from the empire in who's territory they are until they are dealt with. I mean since spaceports are now  like starbases.
