Star naming? When?

Sorry if this has been answered a thousand times but the search function on the fourms just sticks everytime I try to use it. I honestly have not been keeping up with info about the game since it was announced last like Oct. I saw the announcement and, being a Huge Stardock/Gal Civ fan for almost a decade now I immediately preordered the founders pack. But I havn't gotten any email from Stardock on the matter since then which was like 6 months ago. So I'm wondering when will we be able to send in our name a star thing that came with the founders pack? Tell me I didn't miss out on that.. It's the whole reason I got the more expensive pack >.<

Your guess is as good as anyone else's; there's been no word on when we're naming our stuff.

Probably before the game is released to the general public. :)

Well, at first I was considering "Kalthusia" which has special meaning/memories for me from the days when I lived in the Orient, but then I also thought of honoring my father and grandfather by using their middle names, "Dabney". I've also considered "XiWang", which is Mandarin for hope, but I'm leaning more toward one of the first two. But the jury is still out...

We haven't announced a formal date yet, but you should be hearing some news about it soon. :)

Inlai Yornamier is probably the the epic star name I have came up with that meets standard qualities.

I have a name ready for my Star.  Looking forward to being able to do it :-)

Wouldn't you like to play the game for a few weeks first?  It'd be a pity to name your star Marklar only to find it was already in the game.

P.S.  I hope these names are in a big text file or some such when the game ships so I can mod them.  I'm really not looking forward to having a bunch of founders'/founders' relatives'/founders' semi-significant others' names plastered all over my galaxy.

I found the star name list for GC2 on my PC at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition\Data\English. If you used Steam to get "GalCiv 2: Ultimate" like I did, you may be able to find it there. The file is editable with Notepad, but is not alphabetized, so searching through it may be a bit tedious, but I think it is a worthwhile starting place.

Also, I hope StarDock is going to let us know if we submit names that are duplicates of pre-existing names and give us a second chance if we do so.

My guess would be this Summer.

When I sorted the list of stars in the file I listed in reply 11 I discovered that there are masses of duplicate star names in it. Obviously, this does not cause a problem in the execution of GC2, but I wonder if the community would be better served if the list was alphabetized and duplicates removed in GC3?

We're going to be submitting them in some way, it wouldn't be hard to look for ones that are already there.

Emm, this Summer for the naming?

I had the impression (from prototype feedback missing elements 4) that you intend to include the Founder star names even into the alpha.

I consider naming stars to be polish. One usually polishes the car before a car show; not way before.

I am pretty sure none of the game text will be finalized at the alpha stage.

I am perfectly fine having the names only in the retail game (neither in alpha nor in beta), only my impression of Brad's intent was different.

He did say that in one of the founders documents. Maybe he changed his mind. It probably makes the most sense to do that gathering after they stop selling elite editions, so they only have to do it once.

You'd want to use the TA version of the list, that's the DL version.

How can that be? I have never loaded the DL version of GC2 on this PC. And that file I listed came from what Steam has for GC2 ultimate, and the game shows in the title bar "GalCiv2 v2.04 Twilight of the Arnor". Also, the Steam app that verifies the integrity of the game files says the files are ok.

The Ultimate Edition includes DL and both expansions. You can even play DL (or DA), instead of TotA, by using the GalCiv2.exe in the main game-folder (or the GC2DarkAvatar.exe in the DarkAvatar subfolder).

The folder you referred to earlier contains the data for DL. The correct folder for TotA would have been C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition\Twilight\Data\English.

Yep.

The critical distinction is that the DL stars list doesn't have me in it. I didn't get mine until DA :)

Thanks for the pointers.

Here is what I found: DL and TA have star name lists, DA does not.

The lists for DL and TA, when sorted, and except for the star names "Calabrese", "Dexter", "Hoffman", "Kryo", "Marie", and "Wolf" -- which were added to TA -- appear identical (well, my 75 year old eyes did get  bit crosseyed trying to verify this), both containing the same single and triple name entries, and 9 entries for the star name "Towne".

The list for TA is still usable if you want to make sure the name you want to submit isn't already in the list, but you either have to sort the list or use the find function.
