The Factions: Who's Doing What

Who do you want back? What new aliens do you want?

Hey guys, I'm new to this, but I've preordered this game and I'm curious as to what you guys want to see when it comes to the factions.

There are several factions that are lock-and-loaded, like the Terran or the Drengin. But there are some new factions joining in, like the Iridium Corporation.

I'm going to list some factions here, and I'll continually post to add more information on what they might be doing at the beginning of GalCiv3.

Definitely Playable:

  • Terran Alliance
  • Altarian Resistance
  • Drengin Empire
  • Yor Singularity
  • Iridium Corporation
  • Krynn Syndicate

Probably Will Be Playable:

  • Thalan Contingency
  • Iconian Refuge
  • Drath Legion

Sadly Unlikely:

  • Arcean Empire
  • Torian Confederation
  • Korath Clan

Be free to disagree with my above list. Also, some of these guys, like Torians or Arceans, will probably reappear in some way. And there is totally room for even more new factions!

We already know who's going to be in the base game. From the Community Q&A:

ParagonRenegade: How many civilizations will be in the game (not counting custom races)?

Raymond Bartos: Currently we have eight factions for launch: Terran, Drengin, Altarian, Thalan, Yor, Iconian, Iridium, and Krynn. Several unannounced minor factions will join them as well.

Hello xmattwillsx, and welcome to the community. Some thing may not be known to you. Like the Drath are gone and probably won't be playab*. And the arcean are messed up but I don't see a reason why they wouldn't be playable. The torian really are in a world of crap right now, but after the campaign they might have some free worlds, and they definitely have enough fans to be in sandbox mode. Why wouldn't the Thalan and iconian be playable? Other than that the list is accurate.

Geez, I'm sorry I clearly made a mistake. The factions above were only meant as possibilities during the story-driven campaign. I understand if you can play as practically any race in a custom game.

I was also wondering if anyone thinks the GalCiv guys should allow people on the forums to contribute in some way to the story. I mean, there's a lot of unknown's in the story, like where did the Drath go, how the Krynn Syndicate formed, everything in the 16 years since the humans fled.

I know games like Star Citizen do this but I'm pretty sure GalCiv doesn't allow fans to fill in the blanks. Unless that's for the "coming soon" stories page in the databanks.

For example, I'd do something like an Arcean trying to fit in the Drengin dominated galaxy, by maybe working for those feeble-looking Iridium as some muscle.

Anyway, what do people think happened to the Drath, or what Arcean survivors are up to, or any possibilities of stories in the 16 years?

Well I would like to see at least 12 factions like the number that's already on the game. I an dreaming of a choice of 83 different factions. I hope we can at least customize with the Torians abilities.

No.

like where did the Drath go

The Drath homeworld got exterminated during the Drengin/Korath invasion (first mission of the DA campaign). Frogboy hinted that the Drath might not be completely wiped out, but I doubt we'll see them as a playable race again.

how the Krynn Syndicate formed,

Their databanks entry provides a little bit of information about that, but we'll probably hear more eventually.

Do we really need to know more than what the databanks and the timeline say? I would be the first to ask for more lore, but even I think, that we don't need to know every single detail. Some things are best left to the imagination. Plus, we probably hear more about what happened during the campaign.

or what Arcean survivors are up to

Most likely rebuilding their civilisation and, more importantly, their army.

I think your guess is right for initial races- except no Drath- I think we're just getting 8 at launch

I suspect Arceans and Torians will be expansion civs.

Agreed, I also expect the Arceans to show a tougher, more hostile side of their culture than in GalCiv2.  They might even be hostile, or at least very guarded, towards terrains.  Terrains?  Perhaps two factions?  Lots to see....

We need more civs. They don't all even have to have special techs, just a story we can like and makes us want to play as them. Like a ton of minor races that we can play as, for some more variations.

more portraits, insignias, and extra Super abilities should help with immersion and creating better races to play as and against. IMHO.

Why dont we have more information on this. ;(

I want more civs.

There should totally be more civs! Moving from 12 to eight isn't fair. They will totally add more, but it will probably be DLC. (Which makes more sense, considering how many hints they've made about DLC and the Premium Founders.)

Did anyone like a minor race enough that they wanted it to be playable? I know the Snafu (evil squirrels) are a joke, but I like jokes.

LOL. You mean the Snathi. Yea they are popular. They have hyper drive and reproduce fast because there squirrels.

I think minor races are the same as majors, they just haven't had the time to grow. Its been 16 years so they should have more than one planet! All minor should evolve at some point, if they don't get killed by the yor.

it should be like a cycle that move races up the chain, and into our hearts as we watch there evolution into real civs.
