Has no one else even heard of nor tried Mechanized Assault & eXploration (M.A.X.) from Interplay, circa 1996?
Ive heard of it but never played. But Is it a 4x? Looks like a Turn based version of starcraft. Well, I guess that might count as a 4x.
While there isn't much exploration, per se, you have to survey for minerals, gold and fuel. There's a good assortment of land, sea and air units, as well as base defenses (such as gun turrets and anti-aircraft batteries). The upgrade system is much more flexible than, say, Starcraft ... you can research upgrades for just about every aspect of a unit: cost (to make it cheaper), hit points, speed, how much ammunition it can hold as well as the firepower and range. Unlike, say, Starcraft, you can't just harvest resources anywhere, you have to have a way to get the minerals back to your base, either by trucking it or building conduit to directly connect it to your resource network (which your production buildings draw from). The research customization is, I think, one of its greatest strengths. Its turn-based, but can also be simultaneous turn-based (so everyone takes their turns at the same time).
