Redemption, Resurrection, Retribution

The Final Part...

This is the final book of the Jordan Locke series. Part 1 was Altaria's Last Stand, and Part 2 was Jordan's Revenge. Please read them now before start this if you haven't already. If you have, sti back and enjoy the read. Because I have the story more planned out, I should be able to write it faster.

Chapter 1

Through the reaches of space near the remnants of the Terran Alliance, the battleships Independence and Royal Vengeance continued on their journey. Aboard the bridge of the Independence, the ship that led the way through the warp tunnel, a handful of men were at their stations, keeping the ship running. In the captain’s chair sat Jordan Locke.

Three f^cking months, thought Jordan. It’s been that long already? Jesus Christ… A check of the calendar proved the date correct. Jordan leaned back in his chair and recounted what had happened since mercenaries hired by Tresia Kolonus, the leader of an Altarian elitist movement called Uslynthinis, sent mercenaries to board the Independence to destroy the ship and capture his allies, the renegade Yor Ordo, and Aelytha, an Altarian refugee that had fallen in love with Jordan. It had been three months since those events had happened, and to add insult to injury, Tresia had manipulated the Altarian government to place a bounty on Jordan and his men. All of this because Jordan killed at most six people, all of them twisted and cruel. Three months had gone by with no change on his status. The bounty was there, the many serious charges stayed the same, and the bounty remained at fifteen million standard credits. Jordan had doubted that his name would ever be cleared by authorities. With everything dedicated to the war effort, domestic things tended to be neglected. History taught that.

The two ships came out of warp at a star system in order to make any needed turns and let the warp engines recharge. The men at the control stations got up and stretched, as did Jordan. Owen Derekson, a man whom Jordan had hired to work with him, approached. “Jordan, we’re at the system. Now what do we do?”

Jordan leaned back in his chair. “We’ve never really had anything to do, Owen. We can just spend some time here and see if the bounty’s been removed, but I doubt it will.”

“Knowing Tresia and her influence, there is no way that bounty is coming off,” said Owen.

“I know, I know. One can still hope, though. I would try to go into the Terran Alliance myself and try to clear my name, but it wouldn’t work. I’d be put in handcuffs five minutes after docking. Our ships are probably tagged. Two Vortex-class battleships would easily be seen.”

“Jordan, you can still try my idea of contacting Altos for help. I’ve said it many times. I’m not trying to sound rude, but you need to-”

“Owen, if you think I’m closed to other people’s ideas, I’m not. Trust me. I may have used to be, but that was ages ago. I would do it, but people would detect our transmission, and get pretty suspicious. We could go to the Terran Alliance, but like I said, we’d be seen. Talking to Altos is an excellent idea, but we’d be found. There’s no one out here but us.”

Owen checked a display that showed system scans. “Actually, we’re not alone. A group of ships is coming in. Looks like an exploration task force.”

Jordan got up and looked at the display. “Why the hell would the Terran Alliance send ships to a place like this? What’s out here that out scanners didn’t see?”

“They’re not coming from the Terran Alliance systems. They’re coming from somewhere beyond that. The Terran Alliance sent forces out like this before the war. When we started fighting the Drengin, they all returned. Why is this one returning just now?”

“How should I know?” asked Jordan. “Who’s the captain of the task force?”

“Someone by the name and rank of Colonel Jenna Casey. The ships’ ETA is about a half hour.”

“Okay, how did we not see them sooner?” asked Jordan.

“The sun apparently was blocking that area from our sensors,” explained Owen.

“Like holding a coin up to your eye…” said Jordan with an eye roll. “Plot an intercept course.”

After a quick trip at sub-light speeds, the Independence and Royal Vengeance arrived in the general area where the ship’s computers calculated the arrival of the Terran task force. A warp tunnel opened, and about ten small ships sped out of it.

Jordan opened his mouth to order the ships to be hailed, but the lead ship of the task force sent a communication request before he could even speak. He opened up a channel and a communication was projected from the ceiling of the bridge. Jordan found himself looking at an attractive young woman, whom he assumed to be Jenna Casey.

Jordan smiled. “You sent a communication request?”

The woman nodded. “Yes. I am Colonel Jenna Casey of Task Force Odyssey. We are en route to Earth on a mission for the Terran government. Who are you, and how are you in control of such military equipment?”

“My name’s Jordan Locke. Until about two years ago, I held the rank of Captain. Since the Earth Shield was put up, I’ve been out of the Navy.”

“Pardon me, Mr. Locke, but what are you talking about? What is the Earth Shield?”

“Colonel Casey, have you or your fleet received or sent any communications during your trip?”

“At the beginning, yes. Something extremely important happened that cut off our communications. What is this Earth Shield?”

Jordan took a long breath. “Colonel Casey, during your absence, a war between the Terran Alliance and the Drengin Empire was fought. We were winning until the Dread Lords, the Precursor civilization, came out of this pocket universe and started launching attacks. The Terran Alliance managed to stop them, however, the Drengin Empire took advantage of this in order to attack on destroy the Terran Alliance, because there was never a ceasefire. Most of the Terran Forces retreated to Earth, where somehow this force field was raised, blocking anything attempting to cross it. I don’t how they did it, some people were talking about some ghost-like being called Draginol giving a plan for a shield generator.”

Casey’s eyes widened. “Draginol?! He was at Earth?”

“Uh, you know him, or it?” asked Owen, a look of puzzlement on his face.

“What I have to tell the Terran Alliance involves him and many other factors. I have to return to Earth. What’s the status of the Dread Lords?”

“Dead, for the most part,” said Jordan. “The rest have gone into hiding. They’ve caused a civil war in the Drengin Empire. We had a nasty encounter with them at this battle over Toria.”

“What I have to tell the government is vital. I must get back to Earth. The information I have could possibly change the known galaxy,” said Casey.

“I see,” said Jordan. If I can somehow get aboard her ship or travel with her fleet, I can get to Earth and talk to Altos to see if he can help me.

“Before I leave, I must ask: why are you out here?”

“The Altarians have placed a warrant against me for killing several people. Evil people. I don’t want to risk going to the Terran Alliance, because it’s likely I’ll get arrested. Where are you headed for?”

“Earth. Twilight Station to be precise.”

“I need to get there. Can I travel with your fleet? I have a shuttle I can use.”

“And why would I allow that? A criminal is a criminal, even if you are a former Navy captain.”

“Because I didn’t do anything against the Terran Alliance,” explained Jordan.

Casey quickly typed something on her console. “This record says that you have conspired with the Drengin Empire and Yor Collective. You are an enemy of the Terran Alliance and Altarian Republic. Explain that.”

“The leader of those people I killed fabricated information about me. Talk to Commodore Altos Carniss or Admiral Evars. They have the real story.”

“What story?”

“They know what really happened. Now, may I please come along with you? I also have to get to Twilight Station.”

“You have a ship. Fly there yourself.”

“The Independence is going to be easily seen approaching the Terran Alliance. We have smaller ships docked, but people won’t get suspicious if we travel with you.”

Casey nodded, her jaw length hair bobbing slightly. “Very well. We leave soon. Get ready.”

“We’ll need an hour at most,” said Jordan.

“An hour it is. No more.” The channel closed.

“Owen, you and I’ll take the Perseus,” said Jordan

“Right,” said Owen. “I’ll need to take off some of its heavier weapons. The station authorities aren’t stupid. If they see a ship armed to the teeth land in a civilian hangar, well, you know what will happen.”

There was no more to say. Owen alerted the hangar crews and sent them instructions on what to remove. The two then left the bridge and headed for the hangar.

After a quick ride down a turbolift, the two arrived in one of the Independence’s hangars. Owen’s ship, the Perseus, was surrounded by several hangar workers and mechanics. One of them walked up to Owen. “Sir, we’ve removed the heavy mass drivers and missile launchers. We’ve left the lasers intact, and disguised their signatures, as you ordered.”

“Very good,” replied Owen. “Is the ship ready for departure?”

“Ready as it’ll ever be,” said the technician.

Jordan and Owen walked up the boarding ramp and into the ship. Despite being the size of a corvette-class ship, the Perseus only required two people for a skeleton crew. After running pre-flight checks, Jordan and Owen settled into the pilot’s seats.

The hangar master radioed the Perseus. “Everything’s clear. You’re good to go.”

After waiting for the hangar to depressurize, Owen activated the ship’s engines. Once the hangar doors were fully open, the Perseus lifted off the hangar floor and into space. After about ten minutes of travel, the ship arrived at Jenna Casey’s fleet.

One of the ships radioed the Perseus. “You got here earlier than expected. We’re ready to make the jump to Earth. A word of warning though: if we have the slightest feeling that you’re lying simply to use for cover, we’ll be aboard your ship and have your butts hauled off to jail.”

“How heartwarming,” said Jordan, making an obscene gesture even though the communication was only audio. “We’re ready.”

“Jump on our signal,” said the person on the other end.

A few seconds later, the fleet jumped into warp, heading toward the home of humanity.

Why does it say chapter 8? The last one was 6.

Anyway, excellent stuff.

Unfortunately I passed over a smaller chapter (number 7), so that explains any confusion. I edited the original post. Go back and read it, if you haven't. Nothing major happens, just some filler.

Chapter 9

Jordan sat in his small cell, feeling a mixture of despair, fear, and anger. Jim had betrayed him and Altos. He had his mind tainted by Tresia’s influence, and was now using it against his personal enemies. Still, Jordan feared most for Altos, Evars, and other senior command staff who had tried to meet with him. If the news escaped, which it would, the foundations for a massive scandal would be layed out. Jordan imagined the headlines. “Top Terran Navy personnel secretly meet with outlaw!”. This could change the course of the war. Altos, Evars and the others were good at what they did. If they were removed and replaced, the new commanders would not be as effective against the Drengin. The shitstorm that Tresia is brewing will only get worse. At a time like this, any tension between allies can’t happen! Why did I decide to do this?! I could have just stayed somewhere hidden forever. My own damn pride got me into this. I should have realized it wasn’t a good idea…And Aelytha, she’s back in Tresia’s hands again.

The cell door opened, and Jordan saw that the soldier there was none other than Higgins, one of the squad that was at the restaurant in one of Twilight Station’s public areas.

“Oh, it’s you,” said Higgins. “You’ve shouldn’t have come back. That screechy old Altarian lady has been pacing up and down the corridors talking about you. I thought I was just going to get some random person they were questioning.”

“Where are you taking me?” asked Jordan, knowing that he would likely be headed to a hearing that preceded a court martial. Because he was never formally discharged, he was still eligible for this kind of proceeding.

“You are to be questioned by a team of senior officers for misconduct. Follow me.”

Jordan got up and was handcuffed by another soldier, who stood behind him. He followed Higgins through several deserted corridors, thankfully never running into Tresia along the way. Eventually, they arrived at their destination. The other soldier removed the handcuffs and motioned for him to enter the room. The two soldiers took up guard positions as the door closed.

Seven officers sat at a raised table that formed a semi circle around Jordan, who was surprised to see Altos, Evars, and Ebyon to be there. Jordan moved to the spot where the questioned soldier was supposed to sit.

The main officer, whose name plate in front of him read Lewis, looked at a paper. “Captain Jordan Locke, you have been brought before this council to discuss the charges against you. Until an investigation was completed, there were enough charges to immediately begin a court martial. However, after the investigation was completed, many were revealed to be either fabricated or false information. Much of this was explained by Admiral Evars and Commodore Carniss, which will hopefully alleviate some surprise at seeing them on this council. However, some charges still remain. Have you been informed of them?”

“No, sir.”

“The remaining charges are: Failure to report for duty, theft of military vessels and equipment, recruiting outside of Navy regulations, recruiting and equipping ship staff without official training and official mercenary approval, infiltration of a Terran vessel, and six counts of aggravated murder against foreign dignitaries. Do you now have complete understanding of the charges against you?”

“Yes, sir?”

“How do you plead?”

Jordan was silent, slowly pondering the situation.

“Speak,” said Lewis.

“I plead guilty on all charges except for the thefts and the six counts of aggravated murder, sir.”

“Why do you hold out on the charges of theft and aggravated murder, Locke? There is plenty of evidence otherwise.”

“Give the Navy’s version and I will give my own.”

“Very well. After the Earth shield was raised, the ships TAS Independence and TAS Royal Vengeance failed to arrive at the rally point for transferring into the formerly occupied pocket universe. Instead, they charted a course into deep space, where they vanished from our scanners. A small group of other ships, which are now back in Navy hands, followed. As you are the last known person to command these vessels, you have been charged.”

“Sir, the retreat back to Earth was absolute chaos. What remained of my corvette squad had docked aboard the Independence, which was simply in orbit along with the Royal Vengeance, with no command crew whatsoever, only a bunch of crewmen from various ships who had landed on the Independence and Royal Vengeance, seeking apparent safety onboard. During the chaos, the ships went to Mars instead of whatever rally point the Navy had ordered. There was no record of it on the computers. Once I had landed and talked to the crew, I organized everything on both ships to make a retreat into deep space to avoid the Drengin. Most of the Navy’s remnants were now occupied that pocket universe, so we were alone, though we were joined by several other ships later. The resistance I led was born, and more than a year and a half and many events later, I’m back here again.”

“Captain, what you have described is theft, though it is not malicious.”

“I didn’t steal those ships! I planned to return them to the Navy once I had returned to Earth from the battle at Toria. This was before Tresia fabricated lies against me, and-“

“Which brings us to the murder charges,” said Lewis flatly. “According to our sources-“

“Which are what?!” asked Jordan angrily.

“Locke, do not interrupt! This is your only warning! According to our sources, you confronted Tresia Kholonus about some trivial issue, and became so enraged that you and the men with you opened fire on your orders.”

Good, they think I did it out of rage. I never intended to have killing be the first option, but I still planned it out, though Jordan.

“Sir, Tresia had ordered some of her men to hack into the Independence’s computers to steal data during an event I had hosted aboard the Independence. After hearing about this, I went to confront Tresia about it. Things rapidly spiraled, and before too long, I lost control of myself and my men and I began to fire. Soon after I killed her main cronies, a gang of mercenaries infiltrated the Independence to simply attack and kill my men. The rouge Yor Ordo and another one of my crew, who has since escaped from Tresia, were kidnapped.”

“Aelytha Kommenos, correct?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Please continue.”

“I knew Tresia’s influence and power, so I did not intend to kill her. After verifying that the hack attack was done by Altarians, I went simply to talk to her about it. She continued to mock and insult me, and something inside me snapped.”

“This was not the first time you had encountered Tresia Kholonus?”

“No, sir. During the time of my resistance force, I often met with Commodore Carniss after finding him at an Iconian station. As you probably know, Tresia stayed on his ship. During our meetings, she would constantly interrupt, obstruct various proceedings, and belittle and insult me even though I offered no earlier provocation. She is simply blinded by her ignorant hatred.”

“Ms. Kholonus has made it clear that before the shooting incident, you threw a knife at her. Is this true?”

Jordan sighed. “Yes, sir. After uncovering the Korath spore technology, I met with Altos to discuss it, only to have Tresia and some of those who believed in her ideals obstruct the meeting. After continuing to berate me, I threw my knife to purposely miss in order to frighten her. That’s all there is to it.”

Lewis was silent.

“Sir, Tresia ordered the infiltration of my ship twice! That is an act that would allow sanctioned retribution by the Navy!”

“Captain Locke, do you have anything more to say before this council goes into deliberation?”

“Tresia Kholonus is a danger to both the political and cultural alliances between Terrans and Altarians, sir. That is all I have to say.”

“Captain Locke, you are dismissed. You will remain detained until the council reaches a decision on whether to proceed with a court martial.”

Higgins and the other soldier entered the room, handcuffed Jordan, and led him out of the room. The three walked through several corridors until they arrived at a new cell, which was larger and had a few basic necessities. After the door was sealed, Jordan sat down on the bunk and looked into the camera that was mounted on the ceiling, hopefully causing the person in the security room to become annoyed. After a few minutes of this, he became bored and laid down, falling asleep.

The cell door pounded. “Wake up, Locke! You’ve got a visitor!” shouted the guard from outside the cell. The door opened, and Aelytha slowly entered. She glanced warily around the cell, then ran toward Jordan, hugging him.

“I’m glad to see you’re okay,” said Jordan, still embracing her. He let go. “What did they do to you?”

“They asked me a whole bunch of questions about how and why I was with you,” said Aelytha, glancing back at the camera. “I can’t really tell you what they asked.” Aelytha then mouthed, “Can you read lips?

“Yes,” mouthed Jordan. All members of the armed forces were required to learn basic lip reading for situations where radio silence was required. It was extremely popular and widely used in the Navy to keep conversations personal in the crowded spaces of a spaceship.

“They asked about how I escaped. While I was being escorted, I saw a news report about an Altarian gang being the main suspects for the raid on Tresia’s ship. When they asked about that, I said that they came into the holding section looking for money, but found me. I told them that they said that they would let me go in exchange for having sex with the gang leader. The leader said he knew me after I mentioned you, so he handed me over, since they had no use for me.”

“And they bought the story?”

“I don’t know. It seems they have.” Aelytha suddenly spoke out loud. “Jordan, I really don’t know what’s going to happen to you.”

Realizing Aelytha’s move to deceive their observers behind the security cameras, Jordan played along with it. “I don’t know either, Aelytha. But listen, you should take refuge on Earth. It’s safe there,” he said, turning the conversation serious.

“I don’t what I’m going to do, Jordan.”

The cell door opened, and a soldier stepped inside. “Locke, the council has summoned you. Come with me. Lady, the visit’s over. Return to your quarters.”

Honestly, spellcheckers don't even come close to living up to the hype (and that includes grammar).

As for the post, I liked it - particularly in that the Navy seems to be fairly reasonable, rather than the possible show trial that could have been expected.

To my few remaining readers. I've been bogged down with assignments and upcoming AP tests, so I haven't been able to write much. After school these days, I just prefer to tune out to my games rather than write.

I will have some new stuff posted soon. The plot will soon get out of this sort of slow pace it's in right now, and get back to the war.

Although I have most of the plot worked out, I still welcome questions and suggestions.

All right, I am back in action! I will not be able to write for a week, as I will be out of the state, but I will still write stuff by hand while I am gone. Things are heating up now!

Chapter 10

Jordan and Aelytha stood up and left the cell, following their respective escorts. Before she turned the corner, she gave Jordan a longing glance over her shoulder.

Jordan and his guards reached the room where the hearing had taken place. He then entered, the guards taking their usual position.

“Sit down, Locke,” said Lewis. After Jordan had taken a seat, he continued. “Captain Locke, after several hours of deliberation, this council has reached a decision. The situation presented was not an easy one to resolve.”

“I understand, sir,” said Jordan after Lewis had paused for a brief moment.

“Not an easy decision to make?! This case should have been resolved instantly and effortlessly!” screeched an all too familiar voice.

Never gonna give up, are you Tresia? thought Jordan, shaking his head, not even bothering to turn around to see his tormentor.

Lewis scowled and stood up. “Miss Kholonus, we have completed an investigation as you constantly asked us to do. Please be quiet! It is a privilege to silently observe proceedings!”

“Terrans…” muttered Tresia. She sat down in a small section reserved for military onlookers, adjusting her robe-like garments.

“Continuing, this council has investigated the charges of aggravated murder and theft of military vessels. After deliberation on whether to proceed with a court martial,” finished Lewis.

“And?!” said Tresia in a raised voice.

“The council has voted, four to three, to not continue with court martial proceedings. The charges that you pled guilty to have been dropped as well. Jordan Locke, you are cleared of all allegations against you.”

Jordan breathed a sigh of relief and leaned back in his chair, grinning.

“WHAT?!” screamed Tresia, standing up with such speed that her chair went flying backwards. “THIS IS AN OUTRAGE, A CHEATED OUTCOME, AN-”

Altos stood up, “Tresia, be quiet! This council has examined a great deal of evidence and has spent much in deliberation. This decision is final and-”

“Locke has raided my ship on Altaria and has-”

“That cannot be proven! Reports have shown that the break-in you are mentioning was performed by an Altarian gang! We have questioned Aelytha Kommenos thoroughly and her report matches ours! Simply throwing around lies will not get you anywhere.”

Tresia smiled coolly. “I do know a truth: Kiso-Sa.”

DAMN HER, screamed Jordan mentally. His heart turned to ice, though he still miraculously maintained a straight face, holding on to part of his training.

“Excuse me?” asked Lewis.

“July 26th, 2224. The explosion of the under construction Drengin station in that system was caused by Jordan Locke and his wingmen, killing tens of thousands of workers!”

Jordan couldn’t take it anymore. “Tresia, that’s a load of bullshit!”

“Silence, fool!” screamed Tresia.

“This is ridiculous!” said Evars disgustedly. “Again, our reports of that unfortunate incident prove otherwise. Jordan’s squad was in that system at the time, but the only two fighters were by the station: the squad leader and another. The quality of Drengin buildings were, and probably still are, of defective quality. Investigations showed a failure in the reactor containment field that was being installed, leading to a chain reaction and meltdown. Part of the wreckage actually slammed into the squad leader’s fighter, destroying it and killing the unfortunate man flying it. Other details are fuzzy, due to the fact that the meltdown sent a massive radiation blast, scrambling electronics on both the fighters and construction barges that were in the area. All of Jordan’s squad testified about the incident. As for the “tens of thousands” of lives lost, the Drengin, like most races, utilize drones for that phase of construction. There were likely a two dozen souls on that station when that explosion happened, and that’s a high estimate.”

“THIS IS A-”

“SILENCE!” roared Lewis, slamming his fist on desk, sending some pens flying. “This investigation is complete. Captain Locke, you are to report here tomorrow at 14:00 to receive any honors for your actions during the past year and a half.”

Tresia stormed out of the room, swearing in Altarian.

Jordan stood up, saluted the council members, spun on his heel in a formal style, and left the room, meeting his escorts, who were given information about the results and what was to be done. Pardons, clearance, redemption, whatever they call it, it’s done. He watched Tresia stride down the hall. I know this won’t be the last time we meet, you twisted bitch. Next time, I’ll have the advantage. His escorts led him to a complex reserved for military guests. One opened the door, saluted Jordan, and both left.

The apartment was small, with a few basic comforts. Jordan had just taken his shoes off to watch local media when Aelytha burst into the apartment. “Jordan!” she gasped.

Jordan smiled. “I’m clear, Aelytha.”

She squealed with delight and threw her arms around him, locking him in a tight embrace while she sobbed with happiness. “Thank god…Altos…Admiral Evars,” she mumbled between sobs.

“Aelytha, I need to tell you something important.”

“Go ahead, Jordan.”

Jordan took a deep breath. This isn’t going to be easy…”Aelytha, these are going to be the last few days that we will spend together for a long time,” he said sadly, touching her cheek. “I’m going to be officially stripped of outlaw status, be reinstated within the Terran Navy, and likely be assigned to be a battle fleet. I’ll make sure that the Navy here takes good care of you. They’ll likely give you an apartment down on Earth.” Jordan sighed, knowing that he as treading dangerous ground, knowing Aelytha’s emotional instability. He already saw her lip starting to quiver.

“I understand, Jordan,” said Aelytha in a small voice.

“This isn’t a goodbye, Aelytha. I promise to constantly stay in touch with you. You did a great job as a counselor on the Independence, but the Navy won’t allow you to serve because you haven’t had any Navy training. I’m going to miss you so much, and I promise to stay in touch with you. You’ve changed me entirely since I met you during that Glythiual party on Altos’ ship. You mean everything to me, and I want to make sure you’re safe. You will be under the Navy’s protection. Tresia won’t be able to get her hands on you. I swear on my life.”

Aelytha simply embraced Jordan again, sealing any doubt of a possible emotional rift between them. The two simply enjoyed their last night together, with Jordan politely declining an invitation to dine with the officers who had presided over his hearing, where he knew he would be facing the steely glare of Admiral Ebyon. The vacation’s over. Back to work.

I hate to say this, but due to the fact I no longer work on this, I've decided to abandon this story.     Thanks to everyone who read this story and supported it. It was a good ride.

That's a shame to hear - this series notably improved from the beginning, and this one in particular was quite a good read.

As this was a fanfiction and not an actual AAR, can you tell us anything where you were planning to go with the story from here?

There was a LOT left. However, after giving some thought, I might just write out the end chapters (I had the whole plot planned out), showing the massive battle that destroys the Dread Lords. For old times sake. When Galciv3 is announced, I'll write the rest out when the community is active again.
