Limit the number of players per Empire

If there is to be any realistic competition between the Empires it looks as though there is going to need to be a limit to the number of players that can join an empire. Most Empires have less than 10 to 20 players yet some are showing as many as 55, 88, and 95 players in them. This makes the competition between the Empires not about how well your players play the game, but how much time you invest into recruiting more players. I believe each Empire should be limited to 20 players or less.

Also what happens in the case of the the Texas Republic where our Empire controller (Senate) seems to have vanished from the Empire?

Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Empires are not always about having the best or
brightest. It does help to have a numerical advantage.

Recruiting and propaganda are part of what makes
empires interesting.

Well, I don't care much about the metaverse, but I had the same idea already. Makes VERY much sense in my opinion. :)

Apollo 43: Why not join us? Talk it over with those still active in the Texas Republic. , our Texas brothers would be welcomed into G.R.O.S.S. with open arms if you'd like to make a bigger empire. Or if you just wanted to come over alone, that's fine too. We don't care about individual scores. They all help. And we don't have the politics of some of the other empires. We play to get away from that. :) If you love Calvin and Hobbes, or ever wanted to be a pirate, this is your chance. :)

But back on subject.
As one of the medium empires with about 20, I too have felt that it's hard to overcome 50 or 80 but we're hanging in there.

And I do like your idea; however, I don't see how you can tell Apolyton "Hey!!! Toss out half your members." I also think that limiting members could lead to the "Your not good enough for us" effect and lead to much kicking and hard feelings with the result the occasional gamers could be "Relegated" without a chance to contribute to a good empire.

I agree with Staffa. If you put a hardcap on Empire membership, you've basicly just made the empires meaningless. The only empires that would be top condenders would be those that have the top handful of metaverse players.

The Republic is a great up-and-coming Empire. If you are interested in joining an empire where all your scores make a real difference, check us out!

What if there was no hard limit on the number of members, but only the best 20 scored?

That resolves the problem of forcing score conscious
empires kicking out poor performing members, but
it creates the situtation where instead of being
a minor contributer, beyond those 20 you become
a non contributor. I think the point of empires is to let
_everyone_ contribute to a group cause.

I currently feel its fine the way it is, though low difficulty
games are scoring to many points imo.

Hawai, this would be very frustrating for those players who are not among the Top20.

Anyway, in spite of my initial posting I have to admit that there are some good points against limiting players/empire. Not longer sure about it.

True, those are good points.

I guess it comes down to the 'vision' for the Metaverse, multiple small empires, or the eventual creation of massive empires from mergers in an 'arms race' to achieve dominance.

I'd favor the small model, and if it is frustrating for the ones not in the top 20 they can go off and form their own empire. But at least they wouldn't get kicked out for lack of contributing by the more aggressive members.

Anyways, it was just a thought. Either way works.

Well, I believe that 95 happens to be the GoneGolders, which I joined because I never would have heard of GalCiv if it weren't for the forums over at GoneGold, where it has been very highly praised. Truth is, if you actually look at the numbers, the vast majority of members haven't posted any scores.

True, the opportunity to exploit the metaverse through sheer numbers is there, but as others have said, that's part of the fun is recruitign people.

One cool idea might be to have another new ranking based on average scores of all members of an empire. This would create multiple goals for an empire to shoot for. Just a thought.

Apollo, i too have thought that large empires such as Apolyton should have a limit imposed on their size but if you look at the scores its entirely possible for an empire of half the size of Apolyton to overtake them in the rankings. Its all about how active your members are. I would imagine that only half of Apolyton's members are even active.

Anyways I just wanted to throw in a plug for the Midwest Confederation as an alternative to all disenfranchised Texas Repulic members. There is an Australian/New Zealand empire, a European Empire and a Canadian Empire. 2 of which are above us in the rankings and one which is hot on our tail. We could use your support to keep the largest US of A empire strong in the rankings. Check out our website an see if you like it and spread the word to your fellow Texas Reuplic members. http://idle.thehueys.com/midwest

In our empire only 20 players send scores in last 2 weeks.

By the way, spamming everythere with your request to join your empire isn't a good thing also.

There should be no more than 9 members per empire.

All members should be required to submit at least one game a week or be removed.

No empire should be allowed a silly name and all symbols should be limited to no more than 3 colours.

All player names should be standardised to conform to a 6 alpha, 4 numeric pattern.

The top 10 scoring players will be randomly assigned to different empires to prevent unfair competition.

Naturally what this game needs is MORE rules. Otherwise life would be unfair.

Mmm? Assign equal score to every player. Every player has a personal empire and can't leave it to join another empire.

Yeah! Absolutley!
And each empire has to make the same amount of posts in this forum, else those who post more get an advantage.
And no jokes should be aloud here - this is serious topic, not a game or stuff!

First of all there are 2 other entries in this thread regarding membership opportunities in other empires so I was just throwing our name in the ring as an alternative to Apollo who was lamenting about the state of his current empire.

Secondly, 20 members out of your close to 100 members submitting scores in 2 weeks is exactly what I am talking about. There is no need to fear the large empires taking over as they are usually bloated with inactive members. A good active 20 member empire can easily do quite well in this system.

Ok. As i already said, if fairplay is over, so be it!

Better join Apolyton empire because you'll get my Tiny Masochistic Walkthrough and you'll be in top 25 on Metaverse in ~10 hours if you want to.

Also, you'll be part of great strategy gamers community, and this is a good thing IMHO (at least i'm happy with that). You are posting some kind of signature in all your messages. But this forum doesn't support signatures. So i consider it as a spamming. And if i think that someone doing something unfair, so do i.

Actually, I think they created all the individual category boards just so there'd be something for alot of people to shoot for. They haven't done it for empires but the empire logo gets posted on the individual board.

I actually had an idea of having a true pirate empire. The Pirate empire wouldn't be ranked as such and would be limited to about 5 members (who's individual rankings could be posted) They would randomly be assigned an empire to plunder weekly taking points away from that empire's score through their games. Of course in fairness, the pirates would not know who they were actually plundering week to week and the bigger the empire's score, the more chance they would be the one's plundered. That would be a hoot. And of course, empires could assign a player who's score would counter the pirates but not add to the empire's that week. Now that would add some serious strategy empire wise.

Or we could of course have 2 or 3 small 2 or 3 person or even 1 person pirate empires like that floating about.

But it's probably too complicated to implement and peeps would cry foul!!!.

Numbers help, but the reality on the Metaverse is that number of players is not solely deciding rank. 8 of the top 20 empires are made up of less than a dozen people. 5 of those top 20 have only 2-3 people!

On the top 10, one empire has only 8 players, 6 empires have between 20-30 players, and 3 have more than 30 players each. Sure, the top two spots belong to large empires, but the three most active, competitive medium empires (ANZAC, GROSS, MWC) are in a tight grouping battling for the third through sixth spots, with The White Council, a small but very active empire, making all three of them run for their money. Size doesn't seem to matter that much. Active participation seems to matter more.

But site needs to live somehow. I think your site don't have 33015 registered members?

Size of active players will matter over time, the
metaverse is still very young and smaller empires
can compete, but in the end, numbers will rule.

This isnt a bad thing though.

I don't know. Perhaps the pot calling the kettle black is even the more disgusting.????!!!! But I'm just gonna pull up a chair, sit back, and enjoy this cat fight.

And actually I'm one of the 33016. It (Apolyton) is a great site. And not just for Galciv. But that doesn't mean I have to join that empire.

It's so nice of you to Give G.R.O.S.S. all that pub on your mwc site. We are the apple of their eye........... Oh yes lil ole us. HEHE. They are obsessed.
