My retail copy of Demigod

Lan

My two roomates and I purchased retail copies of Demigod today at our local Gamestop. When we returned to home and installed the games we were confused to not see a "Lan" option under the multiplayer menu. The game manual states that Lan is a viable option for playing the game, but there is no way to my knowledge to host a lan game. Could someone please help us asap! We are hosting a LAN party and everyone is getting restless!

You need to update from Impulse.  Impulse was installed by the game so look for it in your Start menu.

There IS a way to update offline, I hope? The only computer in my house capable of running Demigod (mine) doesn't have internet, and no, before you ask, I can't get it.

I guess what I'm asking is: Can I download the update from a net-connected computer and then transfer to mine, or am I SOL?

You can do so using Impulse Anywhere, however that download will be the entire latest build of the game rather than just a patch file.

Okay, but I have a retail copy coming my way. Can I update the retail copy without having to download the entire game? This computer downloads at somewhere around 43 kbps, so I'd rather not DL a 2+ gig file.

Impulse does patching incrementally (it looks at what you have, and grabs the files that are changed from the server), so there isn't a standalone patcher. If you need to reduce the amount to download, you will need to install the game on the machine you're downloading on, then update it using Impulse, then pack it up and copy it to the play machine.

How else are you meant to update a game?

Okay, maybe that wasn't the right wording

I was hoping that the retail box of the game would arrive to me whole, finished, and complete with all the advertised features, of which LAN play is one.

Failing that, I was hoping there was a way to download the update that I need and ONLY the update that I need without installing the game on a second computer, as neither of the other two computers in my house are capable of installing Demigod (neither has a DVD drive).

I have surely misuderstood something: How are you expecting to install Demigod from retail version if neither of your computers has a DVD drive?

BTW, with Impulse anywhere, all you need is a good Internet connexion and an USB key with enought room.

Let me clarify: MY computer has a DVD drive, but no Internet.

The other two (my sister's and my dad's) have Internet, but no DVD drive. Also, they each download at below 1 MB/s, making them slightly less than a "good internet connection."

It's already been stated by kryo that Impluse Anywhere would download the ENTIRE game, which is not an option with the available download speed. Hell, this computer would struggle just downloading Impulse itself.

Just to be clear on the setup: you have a computer that has a DVD drive, but no Internet. That's the computer you want to play on.  You have two other computers with Internet and no DVD drive.

I haven't tried this, but theoretically you could install Demigod on your machine. Use the "archive" option to make a copy of the install. Copy the archive over a USB key to one of the computers with Internet. Install Impulse, login as you, and unpack the archive (effectively installing Demigod).

Patch, then repeat the archive process in the other direction.

That is obviously a PITA, but I think it'd work. I really don't understand why your computer can't get on the Internet though, you can't just move it temporarily to replace one of the other computers and use its connection?

This is correct.

As to why I can't get on the internet: Parents.

Sounds ridiculous, yes. Is ridiculous, yes. I cannot physically move my computer and briefly connect to the internet because my 'rents disapprove.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try it (what other choice do I have?). Just wish LAN came activated with the retail copy is all.
