Avoiding war early in game

When I first started playing I figured the best way to start would be to build ships to defend my planets, such as the BattleAxe. However, after being bullied into bankruptcy or unwinnable wars I discovered a better strategy both by trial and error and reading this forum. The key seems to be building large amounts of starfighters, which are actually pretty useless in battle, but significantly boost your military rating. This is because the military rating is based solely on the cumulative value of your attack values for all your ships. In this way I was able to prevent the taunting from the other races and avoid war long enough to build up useful ships like the dreadnougt. I have heard that the military rating will be alterred in the new version to account for defensive value of ships but how about addressing this paper tiger issue. Any thoughts out there?

Sounds about right. I usually build corvettes though. I think their defence is a bit higher and the amount of turns to build is the same so ...

I have found that a good econ with extra cash is better than a fleet, the firs ship I build is the battlecruiser. Its cheaper throw the AI a fer bones than it is to build all those usless ships.

The "paper tiger" starfighters aren't completely useless though as when I get dreadnoughts I trade them away to weaker civs for tech or just to improve relations. I've just found that its close to suicide to wait too long before building up your military rating somehow, someway. It just seems like they need to adjust the rating beyond the cumulative value of your attack (and defense in 1.4)....not sure how though.
