Built and used my first Terror Star last night

I had a game that got locked into a head-to-head power struggle with no obvious advantage to either side and as things ground on and on I finally had the time and resources to put together a terror star (built it on a very well-defended starbase parked on the edge of the enemies home sector) and gave it a test drive.

I wasn't sure exactly what to expect but was thrilled to watch the enemy's hugely populated system go out in a blink.

outtasite!

everyone needs to take one of these things out for a spin.

I got the terror star tech in my game last night- but couldn't figure out how to build one. I didn't see it in the planet build queue. Do you use constructors?

Thanks,

C&P

Have not built one yet, but it seems to be a series of starbase modules. Build a bare starbase and try upgrading it once you have the Terrorstar techs. There are 5 techs showing on the tech tree:
1) Terror Star
2) Terror Star Shell
3) Terror Star Bridge
4) Terror Star Core
5) Terror Star (again?)

Yes, you need to upgrade a starbase with several terror star modifications, I believe the exact number was four.

In addition, the game prompted me to pay 5,000 b.c. to complete construction of the base. While this is expensive, I like the idea because it prevents the MOO 2 syndrome of the large civilizations having 30 "death stars." They SHOULD be rare.

Unfortunately, the damned things fly at 1 parsec a turn, so build close to the enemy star systems and make sure you protect it. I'd wish they'd up the movement to 3 or even 2, especially since it would still me drastically slow compared to other ships in the later stages of the game.

Have fun imploding stars,

JD

2 late game Terror stars loaded to the max with cultural and defensive enhancements. Escort into the centre of the enemy's area and watch masses of systems defect to your cause... much fun!

Diving Duck, that would be Super-Fun-Happy-Star then.

Or perhaps a Terror-Starbucks.

I like the idea. Do you need to be evil to get terror stars?

AI build terror stars....

I saw a bright level Altarian built a terror star and used it against me, until my torian ally destroy it, by sending all its fleets against it !!!

Ai also knows how to deal with terror stars....

Freddie - Yep, super fun happy terror star time. It was late game, had most of the tech researched and thought... what the hell. I saved up 30+ constructors (had several planets churning one out a turn so didn't take too long), used the Overlords to clear a path to their heartland and then sailed in and built 2 terror stars in one happy go. Their systems only took 2-3 turns to crumble, they were even causing defections in the adjoining sectors. It's a really good way of putting the smack down on an AI in a short space of time. You just have to be sure that you can deal with all the ships that get booted out of the systems when the colony defects.

Have still to see the AI use them though, although if it works out my strategy and uses it against me I'm gonna be in trouble!

I am still playing the same game but I am neutral at the moment (think I'm at 53) but have ambitions of being a tad nastier from now on.

Is anyone else here having problems getting an excaliber class ship to build? Mine just don't show a picture in the build queue and then stick on Next Month message and never finish building.

Last night, I ended up building two terror stars, and sending them out with party palaces. It's just too easy - sectors fall left and right. I can't imagine anyone wanting to actually blow things up with them (well, except for the cool pyrotechnics) instead of just using them as missionaries. :)

the idea of that sort of cultural clobbering appeals to me in a perverse way...

"Don't be so proud of this technological terror you have constructed. The power to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force."

saw someone on usenet post it, i think it's funny enough to repeat.

The real reason I did it was because I wanted to see if starbase movement bonuses were applicable to terror stars, and if they'd stack.

They don't, but hey. :)

Watching the effects of +503% influence was quite fun.

I have done the same. Why blow em up when they want to join you!

"No, no, Alderaan is a peaceful planet, we have no weapons!"

"That's ok, neither do we. We're here to sell stuff and show you how to dress."

Well, I moved two fully outfitted terror stars into the quadrant of a minor race (I did a lot of Diplomacy research, and was a real convincing kind of man). Ten turns later, they had still not come over to my point of view.

So one of the stars, erm, accidentally, ah, bumped into the star. Sadly, contact to that minor race was kinda lost afterwards...

I never put culture upgrades on my terror stars. I much rather trample on their corpses than sell them cheap trinkets. ;)

I did it to see if sectors really would fall before the terror star could cross the adjoining sector.

They do.

I was playing on a gigantic map, tight clusters. (Note to self: as much as I like playing large maps in these games, Giganic is TOO BIG even for me!) I was playing evil, and the Torians managed to grab a bunch of resources and were outpacing me in most things. Then they decided to get uppity.

Anyway, after a few short wars, I built and sent a couple of terror stars supported by dreadnaughts into one of their clusters. I ended up vaporizing almost the entire cluster, causing their entire economy to collapse. Where before they were spending 500-800bc per turn per production category, afterwards they had trouble breaking 150bc in any one category. :)

maybe once you build a terror star, culture bonuses shouldnt happen anymore.... its much more fun to blow things up then to get them without a fight

That was funny. LOL

Jon, if you don't want the terror star to have cultural bonuses, don't build them into the terror star.
