Do we need tournaments?

Just a save of 1st turn - then everyone will be on the same starting conditions. Better if it will be official.

If someone likes competition - say yes!

But what *is* best? Hitting End-turn until you run into the tech victory will give you the highest score, so much for sure. LOL

1) You can turn tech victory off. It will be off for everyone because everyone has the same save.
2) Who said you that we must use scoring system?
3) IMHO it's interesting to participate in tournament.

For now bad thing is that a game score may be uploaded to a metaverse only once, so we need developer's help with this.

Also, it will be good if tournament games will be saved in a different way on a metaverse - i mean not like now 'Gigantic galaxy,...' but like 'Tournament XXX'. It will be much better IMHO.

Also, it's better for developers - then they can see that strategies are more efficient then starting conditions are the same for all players.

Wow...this is a fun idea!

Anyone want to setup a game, and put it for download somewhere? Must we also decide if we all will be playing pure good or pure evil?

Yes!

I suggest that we start out around Normal intelligence levels.

Can we put it in the Library on galciv.com?

Awards could be given to different types of victories...

Hishest Alliance win
Highest Cultural win
Highest Conquest win
and
Highest Tech win

This would level the playing field on the whole point disparity. Or in the set up of the game declare what type of victory must be achieved.

How would we check the scores? All of the results would have to send to a single person to verify.

I like the idea, but people would still have different events. A certain Precursor event could change a whole galaxy.

Here is the rules for Civ 3's Game of the Month on civfanatics.com:

This sounds great! also, someine should start it up, announce the conditions in the forum, and anyone who wants to join responds in the time limit. Then, after the game, you post stats, not scores, and gain awards for things other than just victories, like "Most Wins" or "Most Humiliating Defeat" LOL

"Every month we start a new game, save it in the very first turn and place it on this site. Then everyone can download this saved game and play it. Since everyone plays the same game in the GOTM, it allows for a much more meaningful comparison of skills than the High Score Hall of Fame or the Civ3 Tournament."

Problem is: Galciv is much more luckdependant. I'd love to see saving/loading prohibited but it would require a great deal of trust. I would surely play a tournament game if someone organised it but i would play with my own rules: As little saving/reloading as possible and no more than 1 starbase/sector.

I just thought of something. It might be fun if everyone would make screenshots once in a while and make up a small 'gameplay example', like Brad did.

And what about this rule:
- you are only allowed to save the game when you stop playing the game, and you should restart the game the next time from that save.

So, in other words: what happens, just happens. No 10 times trying till you get it right. This is rather difficult to check, but it would be fun to see how people handle their problems, instead of going back a few turns when you receive an event you don't like.

I would suggest a normal difficulty game, with standard races, medium mape size, loose clusters etc. I.e. the standard setup for the first game.

For me the challenge would not be to get the highest score, but just to have a fun game and see how other people did it. If people are interested, i can setup a website with the savegame, and the gameplay examples.

Better to wait 1.04 IMHO.

Great minds think alike ;) I would easily trust people if we decide not to save/ reload our games. It would be a 'fun challenge', and if someone wants to cheat, let them do it.

It would be fun to have a set of rules, but I am not so sure about the 'no more than 1 starbase/ sector' rule.

For me the points would be of no interest, but I would like to see my playing style compared to other people's playing style.

It would also be fun if we could rate a game, not by

Maybe we could

Hmmmm in my previous post ignore the:

"It would also be fun if we could rate a game, not by

Maybe we could
"

I am not sure what that did there :notsure:

And why wait for the 1.04... we could run a open 'beta' ;)

Got to go... cya later

This is a great idea!!!

I don't think I trust people enough to play the proper settings...but can you really download a game setting and begin that way?

There's no need to limit starbases or saves IMHO...if we all play with starbases and saves/reloads, it'll all balance out anyway. As long as everyone started out the same (in the same galaxy, same placement, same planets, etc).

If we just base this on settings...the guy that starts out near a mess of yellow stars in the far corner is gonna come out on top with score. We need to all play "in the same galaxy" so to speak.

Is that possible?

This is a good, nay great idea! And this coming from someone who doesn't want to get invlved in all the metaverse stuff. But I would be interested in, at some point in the month, playing a set game like that!

Perhaps they could put in some anti cheating options, like some method to stop people doing endless save/reloads. I wonder how that could be done?

Ellestar's original idea was a save of the first turn, probably distributed amonst the participants.

This is a neat idea, I'm liking it more and more as I write on!

Good idea. We desperately need an ironman feature though.

It's an old idea, it's not mine of course.
