I downloaded PM2008 today. Given that my computer can comfortably run Counter Strike, Half Life 2, Doom 3, etc, I wasn't expecting any problems with PM08. Turns out I was wrong. The multiplayer won't work because I don't know (and can't get) the username and password to except ports from my router. The slowdown during the single player game makes it absolutely unplayable for me.  Can I get a refund? I still have all the relevant registration information if identification is needed.

The official refund policy dictates that, for a full refund, there has to be a fair attempt to get the game working. If we could peek at your debug.err, perhaps we can help get your game running at a more playable speed.

It's generally helpful to find out what kind of machines people are having difficulties running the game with. If it's a system that definitely surpasses the requirements we'd like to know what's wrong whether you want and get your refund or not.

Everything that could put more pressure on the game (map glow, outlines, etc) are turned off.

I can't play multiplayer because I'm using a wireless modem and the router has a username/password that I don't have (and can't get). I've disabled the ports from the Windows Firewall, but that solved nothing.

If you are going to tell me to update my drivers, please include a link to where I can download updates. A person in the first thread I linked to updated his drivers and that solved nothing. If you want me to buy a new graphics card, my answer is no, I'd prefer a refund.

If I thought PM08 was going to be such a drain on the system I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

Andrew: While upgrading your drivers MAY help, would you mind waiting for the 1.03 patch that should be coming out shortly? Our preliminary tests show a nice performance boost on NVidia cards like yours, so I'd like to see if that side of things is fixed.

Also, concerning the MP side of things, is it letting you at least get into the lobby? IIRC, you can connect to an open game without those ports being open, you just can't host a game.

But lets see if we can improve your FPS before worrying about MP :)  (not much use playing online when your game is runnning at an unplayably FPS).

I can connect to the lobby but can't see other people's games or text, and other people can't see my games or text. Either that or nobody is talking or playing.

The game is clearly working, even if not ideally so, and you can get into a game, play a number of turns, and get out of it without so much as a crash; getting a full refund isn't a means of renting the game.

As BoogieBac pointed out: one of the terms of the full refund is that a fair attempt to get the game working should be made. Is a little patience too much to ask for?

"Wait until we make a patch, which may or may not fix your problem, and won't fix your multiplayer" is unreasonable. I did not pay for a game that I may be able to play in the future if the developers fix an oversight that shouldn't have existed in the first place.

The fact that at least four people are having this exact same problem, and all they seem to get is people like you being petulant, is an insult to the customers who trusted the designers in the first place. Nice and polite when they're taking your money, but tight fisted and condescending when your product doesn't work.

My computer meets the system requirements laid out on the purchase screen. I expected the game to work. Not to barely work, or to almost work, but work to the standard that it should work. If I'd known then, as I know now, that that system requirements were inaccurate, then I wouldn't have downloaded in the first place.

This is a problem with developing for PC...while we tested the heck out of a 'Minimum Requirement' machine, there's an infinate number of differences between our computers and the ones (like yours) that are getting this bug.

After working with several of the customers, we got a PC that simulated the choppiness and yes, the patch fixes it on that setup. I don't see why it wouldn't fix your graphics problem, but again, the nature of PC gaming means, for whatever reason, it may not (in which case, yes, we'd work on another patch).

As for the MP lobby, I'd be happy to jump on at some point today and see if we can get a game connected. Until more games hit the stores and the new Impulse features make MP easier, I would guess it was just a vacant lobby. Also, the-monk posted a great walkthrough guide on getting ports open....you may need to reset your router (get it back to un:admin and pw: 1234) but at least then you'll have proper control over your network.

Anyways, if you still just want a refund, you'll need to head over to [email protected]. Also, point them to this thread so they can see our current coorisponance.

Patches usually fix minor bugs in games. This game needs a patch just to work properly. That isn't a problem most games have.

I'm not sure how long you've been a PC gamer but this is certainly not the case. Our patches not only fix minor bugs but also any major bugs that we encounter. Our patches also have a tendency to introduce enormous amounts of new features. I guess I could see how that's a bad thing; people hate more mileage out of their money.

And let's not even go into the number of games which have needed patches to work. I remember Diablo 2 refusing to launch without installing the release-day patch. Like it or not: any good PC game, in this day and age, will receive a number of post-release patches (and that's if the developer is a good one).

And I'm not meaning this rudely, but I really suggest not buying any more PC games if you can't show paticence when a system that barely meets the min requirements gives you trouble.

I would never suggest my parents get into PC gaming for the same reason...there are just too many places where things can go wrong.
