Background colors of space

I've just started playing this game and notice that curiously, when you first start a game the background of deep space (zooming out) is black.  But later when I load a saved game, the entire space background will be this blue or sometimes red-orange color, very vibrant and neat but I actually prefer that more black color of space at the farther zoom levels.  I can't figure out if this is some kind of technical glitch or just a game feature, and I can't understand the pattern of when it's supposed to be changing color like this.  Anyone know?

I've noticed to that when reloading a saved game, planet and cap ship names change too. I don't think the save game contains info concerning arbitrary things like this, just things to make sure the gameplay starts out where it left off.
