Some pointers if you could please

Here's the story.

I'm playing on the Intelligent levels onwards. Generally on Huge. I'm in the universalist party with my spending dumped into economics +30, social+20 and military +20.

I'm generally able to snap up an awful lot of worlds from the word go, and I *think* I'm in good shape. By the time I hit the the AI, I'm in the back-end of my colonization phase and ready to move into the military/industry buildup phase. The problem is the AI is already demanding tribute from me, (which I'll pay a couple times to keep them off me). I'll race to bring my defenses online, but they're still overpowering me on the military graph.

By the time I can martial a military, someone is chewing me up on the influence. All the while my population is low. I tend to set my taxes in the low 50s. I can hit alot of the trade goods, no problem, but the problem is I got the AI always declaring war early.

So I'm open to suggestions on how I can minimize the warmongering early enough to get myself in place. Thanks.

I like to research Defense/Deflectors or Weapons/Phasers earlier and build a round of military ships after my fifth or sixth colony ship(somewhere around halfway through the starting bank). Have new colonies work on Constructors so you can switch the production over when the tech comes in. Juggle sliders accordingly.

I'd also recommend a pick or two in Diplomacy. That and the Diplo Translators really makes a difference.

Don't build to defend your planets (unless they're the key level 26 worlds), build to get the most attack points for the buck- Starfighters are the ships of choice during the early game. Military power is based on your total attack value, so having lots of Defenders and BattleAxes results in a much lower total military value than a ton of Starfighters. Of course, the Starfighters are about useless if you get attacked, but with enough of them, you become the 800 pound gorilla and nobody will touch you out of fear of your massive force of Luke Skywalker clones. (At least that's how I explain why such a otherwise sucky craft absolutely dominates in the military rankings.)
