GALCIV: First Official Update Released!

GALCIV: First Official Update Released!

The first update (or "patch" as people tend to call these things in the game industry) to Galactic Civilizations is now available.

Whether you purchased the game at retail or directly, just download Stardock Central from the downloads section and you should be able to see 1.01A.

Changes:
+ Some random events come later in the game.
+ Technology Trade United Planets issue nerfed
+ AI considers technology trade values more at lower intelligence levels
+ Crash bug in diplomacy screen hopefully fixed
+ Terraformer can be built
+ SDNet.lib updated for those who have had trouble submitting scores. Make sure you register with the metaverse.
+ Duplicate building of wonders / trade goods fixed
+ Added 2 new random events
+ Anti-Cheat methods beefed up
+ Metaverse submits difficulty level

There will be another update later in the week so unless any of these things look compellign to you, don't feel obligated to get it.

Though based on the posts, some of the changes to random events and the trade all tech UP issue will probably be good news to some.

Just adding my voice to those who have version.101.029 installed and see the update button saying version 1.01a, yet when I hit submit it begins getting th 84 meg file. Unlike GalCiv, SDC has yet to impress >:(

Yep, same thing 'i_intrude', started d/l'ing the 84 mb version. This is with the retail store copy. I didn't even see 1.01a until I had done the registering of the serial number inside SDC itself as mentioned earlier in this thread.

I too have the retail version and dowloaded the first Bonus Pack outside of StarDock. I just downloaded adn installed StarDock this evening. It shows the 1.01A update available as well, but seems to show 85 Meg for me as well. I am reading this in the left hand window, where it gives the date as 03/30/2003. When I put my serial number in, under Tools/Register Product, it asks for an installation path at the bottom. I pointed this to my GalCiv install. "D:\Program Files\Strategy First\Galactic" Note the installer defaulted to drive C and I changed it to drive D. Could any of that be related?

I just wanted to say awesome job coming up with a patch so quickly! Stardock is quickly becoming one of my favorite companies! :D

Just wanted to chime in with a positive. I did a "Refresh Application Data" in SDC when I got home tonight and the 1.01a update showed up. I downloaded it and it came in at around 1 MB. No problems at all....I haven't run the game since, but I don't anticipate any problems.

I also wanted to make sure Brad and the rest of Stardock know how awesome they are. I mean, this game has not even been out a week yet and already you guys have released an update to the game that fixes some bugs, tweaks some gameplay, and even adds some new content. This is, I think, completely unprecedented in the world of gaming (especially if it keeps up). And, on top of it all, it was released on a Sunday night....*boggle*

I do feel bad for all the people having trouble with Stardock Central, though....I hope they figure out what's causing the problems for you guys. :(

Changing to the Atlanta server did the trick. SDC updated itself, went to restart and caused a memory violation error that Win2K was thrilled about ;p

Manually restarted SDC, entered requested account information and then the update showed up. :d

After installing verion 1.01a, found that ALL other modules were deleted; i.e. Multimedia, bonus pack, window version & manual. :sniff!:

Luckily I had made an archive backup of each individual module & was able to recover that without redownloading. :D

Anyone else had this experience?

It shows my version as 1.01 but I do not see any updates listed.

Stardock ver: .099c.151 build 4

Tried refreshing, what else can I do?

Finally located this "Stardock Central" not really well explained in the docs (or on here).

Finally got it update; it appears you have to register the game at least 3 times before you can get 1.01A *rolls eyes*.

Well it took me re-installing GC and then it found it...I had to download the update, the multimedia update, the windowed version, and the bonus pack..*sigh*

Oh well, it all works now...plus I can still use my saved games..that's what really mattered to me. :CONGRAT:

Okay, I believe I figured out (thanks to a post by Brad in another thread) how to fix the problem with the new update wanting to download the 84 MB base game.

It seems that you need to follow these steps, in this order:

1) Install Galactic Civilizations (this assumes you have either the CD or the independent .exe downloaded from the website, as that's the only way I've done it)
2) Install Stardock Central and register GalCiv (hopefully you know how to do this :) ).
3) Now the Bonus Pack, latest update (1.01a), and a multimedia update will be available to download and install.

It's also possible that it might be smarter to install Stardock Central first and *then* install GalCiv. I'm not sure if that's necessary, but that's what I ended up doing on both of my computers. Couldn't hurt, anyway.

Hopefully that will help some of you get around this problem. If you've already got GalCiv installed and you're seeing the update as 84 MB, then I'd recommend uninstalling the game and then following my directions above.

I had to download the full 85mb thing. The upside of that is metaverse submissions work for me now, or at least one did tonight.

The bug where multiple AIs can build the same GA or tradegood still exists though.

Are you sure it really updated you to 1.01a, Olaf? It didn't reset it back to the base game, did it?

Hmm, hit submit too soon. I was going to say that I actually got a GNN message tonight (after getting the update) that one of the minor races had gotten a trade good and had a monopoly on it...I'd never seen that message before and am hoping it's a good sign that that problem is fixed. :)

Would love to see a change in the next update, when putting a starbase on a resource the "dot" dissapears on the map (right-up corner) and when playing big maps, this becomes a problem to find some of those starbases back (to upgrade for example). Or maybe I'm doing something wrong ? :(

Hopefully the SDC issues will be fixed today. I don't really wish to uninstall,re-install, re-update, to be able to install a 1 MB patch. SDC may seem like a good idea, but in practice it has been far more trouble than it is worth. A simple link to download the patch would be fine...

fredo,

click the 'show ships' button on the starmap, will show you dots for the starbases.

I had the update shown after switching to the Atlanta server (had it set to California sometime)

Ditto DireFog... switching to Atlanta did the trick for me yesterday.

I am pretty sure it did actually update, the exe is different and going back to SDC doesnt allow me to update anymore.

Perhaps someone mixed up the files on the California server?

I too was not seeing the 1.01a.030 update (only had 1.0.129). I noticed that my SDC program was only at release 2 and I saw others had release 4. I don't know why SDC was not updating itself, so I just reinstalled SDC from the "stardockcentralrc1.exe" file. Note, I did NOT uninstall SDC before I reinstalled. Once I reinstalled, the first thing SDC did was download an update and asked me to restart SDC I now have release 4. Now I see the 1.01a.030 update. It did keep all my settings ( I had galciv, bonus, Multimedia and manual installed). When I updated to 1.01a.030, it only downloaded a very small file, not the whole 85mb. My gal civ is not retail, but downloaded.

hope this helps...(I had always been using atlanta server)

According to T-man the problem is that the LInux server is caching the previous files. If you use the Atlanta server (a Windows box) it'll work fine. But the California one (Linux) won't.

Now they're working on figuring out why it's asking to download the full game and not just the 2-3 meg update.

i think i got the update...finally....it downloaded a file that was 1.03MB....but, the exe file still says 1.0.0.1

Is it supposed to say something else?

At one point we had to have set the option to allow (show) betas to be checked in order for them to show up.

If this is a non beta release then please ignore this post.
