What do you listen to while playing?

I've been meaning to make a "Conquer the Galaxy" CD, but now that there's an MP3 player in the bonus pack I guess I won't have to! I'm a big fan of the big, orchestral movie scores, so I'll use the Imperial March and some other Star Wars stuff, a bit of Gladiator and the like. If I feel a bit evil (or rather, communistically oppressive), I'll load up a bunch of old Soviet marches into the player. To break all that symphonic monotony, though, I think I'll play one day with "Highway to the Danger Zone" on repeat for the whole game...

I've got various Star Wars songs in a directory and I listen to that now.

No way.. you guys have it ALL wrong... some nice, dark ambient electronica works best for this game.

Try some Biosphere or Aphex Twin or Mogwai going in the background and you will never go back to those "orchestral" stop-gaps again!

Personaly I like the old orchestral music from the early star trek movies. "Battle in the Mutara Nebula" is a good one. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!

One question though: Do all these songs have to be in mp3 format? If so, where do you get them? I'm kind of ignorant on this mp3 stuff.

AA: Yeah, mp3 is the only format supported (it'll skip over all my Windows Audio files). You can export (I think) mp3 files from CD's using winamp...but don't hold me to this.

I feel really dumb. I can't figure out how to load mp3's into the player. I thought it was asking for playlists, so I put one in the playlist directory...but that didn't do anything. Do I actually have to specify the directory the mp3's I want to play are in?

Mood music depends on the way the game is going.

If I'm in a defensive war, I almost always queue up Heather Alexander's rendition of "March of Cambreadth" if it gets intense (don't know if it's an original song). Hard to go wrong with a war song with "How many of them can we make die!" in the chorus. Of course, it's not nearly period with talk of axes and broadswords. I queue up the rest of her stuff when I'm not in combat.

For offensive wars I usually queue up Wagner. Scary that it speaks to my German heritage at times

I usually start the game with Kitsch In Sync's "Monkey and the Hitman" because it's a bouncy little synth-heavy tune that gets me hyped without triggering any bloodlust.

Bad (inintentional) pun, but I tend to use Meatloaf as a filler. Queen's albumn "A Kind of Magic" also fits in rather well.

If you can find it, the soundtrack to Star Trek 6: Undiscovered Country is the best. The whole movie was about politics (diplomacy, espionage, asassination, betrayal, incidents, accidents, and allegations ;)) all referring to the Cold War. The music really fit the movie, having a huge space epic orchestral sound and it fits GalCiv as well.

Dark Side of the Moon (anybody listen to the new SACD mix yet?) and believe it or not Beethoven work well.

I like Celtic music, both the fast and slow kind.

To use the mp3 player, (after enabling it on the options menu, User Defined PlayList) you can do one of two things:

1) Set the playlist directory to a folder where you have mp3s. Use the entry field at the top of the Load Playlist dialog. A playlist, which is basically an alphabetic listing of the mp3 files in that directory, will be created, and then you can load it.

2) Create a play list in winamp or musicmatch or any other program that exports playlists as .m3u files (windows media player will not) and save it to the playlist directory, either the default one or the one that you set.

CariElf, most of what Heather does is either clasic Celtic or heavily influenced by it, but unless you've lived in San Francisco or the Pacific Northwest, the odds are greatly against you having heard of her, though she does travel. She's successful enough that she supports her husband, but they're not rich. She's a great story teller, too.

Personally, when I'm not cranking the sound way down to avoid disturbing the roomies, I'm usually playing MP3s through the Audiotron on the home theater, so I haven't even tried using the in-game player yet.

Vangelis, Bladerunner does nicely.

A little Wagner for variety.

I'm thinking of making a pop mix with stuff like Transvision Vamp's "Hanging Out With Halo Jones" and Bowie's "Major Tom" and whatever other sci-fi oriented stuff I have lying around.

But for now, the classics are doing me fine.

Various angry people nagging me about something called reality.

Seems to be very popular, based on the suggestions I've been getting; "get a life, Dad", "Could you just for one minute pay attention to what I am saying." and "I'm going to bed!" (usually followed the next morning by "You still up!?")

I put up with all of this and still get no credit for the taking care of and guiding the "Fate Of The Known Universe." for lo these many years.
