Watch your ranges!

In my current game, the Drengin are at war with a minor race that happens to be one of my major trading partners. Since my relations with the Drengin are "friendly", I have been giving the minor race free ships to help keep the Drengin at bay without me getting involved in a war. Then I spotted a great opportunity - an undefended Drengin starbase mining a resource, and a juicy convoy of lightly defended transports holding a total of 4 billion troops deep in Drengin space. I had a battleship only two parsecs away on sentry duty. My evil mind began to churn. This would be sweet....

I pull my battleship up to the Drengin starbase, give it to the minor race, and sit back to watch the fireworks. :d

To my dismay, the battleship turned tail and headed for home without firing a shot. Huh... Some AI...

Then it occurred to me. The ship was out of range of the minor race's home world. So, it shut down, put the crew in stasis, and headed back to friendly territory.

Curses! Foiled again! :sniff!:

I've seen that problem before. I often send a single constructor and build a starbase which I also give to the minor!

Awesome!

I've been having a lot of fun with the other empires giving me free ships to fight the evil Drengin. But I had no idea the amount of fun to be had giving stuff to the other empires. The idea of building a starbase and giving it away is great!
