The Middle of Nowhere

I've just had a string of games where there were one or fewer stars in my starting sector with good planets. Is this a hopeless position, or is there a way to adapt one's strategy to it?

Well I would say hopeless from my experience.Hit Ctrl n to change the map and start over.I would say this is especially true when learning the game.Make good planets abundant in the setup screen.

Depending on the Ai levels you should be able to play from that starting position. You'll have to adapt your strategy to account for the AI having a large starting advantage. Will just be a more challenging game and therefore a more rewarding game to win.
