I finally won on normal.

Diplomacy and trade were key. Persuing appeasement, and keeping nice with all empires via trading my less useful techs enabled me to get my military propped up enough to pick on the weakest civ. I did populists with the +60 diplo and would trade the other civs into attrition. I took all thier money when I could and made the most out of every trade. Trading for influence points helped me keep the culture edge until I could out culture them in late game.

Thx for the help everyone :)

Also, to end with a question, What is the advantage of influence points? Are they just for the edge in the galactic senate, or could I trade for enough of them to help me flip sectors to my side?

With influence points you can control and maybe flip Alien systems.

If you like the pacifist/trading strategy you might want to check out the "Research, Inc" political party mod in the mod library. IMHO it's a very nice mod.

Well, it seems that major AIs take it sometimes, but it is rare. Surely a tweak in the latest releases of Galciv.
