X2 v GalCiv

Which is the better - X2 The Threat or Galactic Civilizations? They look the same, save that X2 is about a year the younger. I would be glad of your opinion.

How do they look the same? Galactic Civilizations is a turn based strategy and X2 is a space-flight simulator and interstellar trading game.

The box is the same shape.

Your answers are no better than those in X2. I wonder why, when someone asks for an opinion, he never gets one.

Maybe it's cause your request is looking kind of strange, since GC and X2 do not have much in common.
GC is a turn based space strategy game
X2 is a real time trade and fight space flight game

They are very similar in many respects. You can conquer the galaxy by force, trade, conduct, etc, etc. Perhaps there is no tech tree in X2; perhaps the war aspect has been played down somewhat in GalCiv.
I remember a teacher being in front of a class and asking if there was anything they wanted to know about the subject and the reply was "We don't know what we don't know" - or, in Mr Rumsfeld's opinion, ".. There are unknown unknowns. Those are things that we don't know we don't know."
I think I know a fraction more than when I started.

Galactic Civilisations is better because you're in control of an entire empire. You answer to no one. As opposed to being a lone starpilot who has to make do with what he's got.

I have decided to purchase this game as soon as it comes back into stock at the price they had it before. It was going for £14.99 at Play.com, whereas Amazon wanted around £25.00 for it. Play.com have sold out for the moment.
Thank you for your kind help. It is greatly appreciated.

I have both games and although I am a big fan of space flight games, GalCiv is by far the better of the two. I still play GalCiv but not X2. I don't think they can be directly compared either, they may vaguely have similar themes of conquest, but they present the player with very different tools, play environment and game mechanics to work with.

I think you have made the right purchase choice. ;)

Thank you very much, Shai-Hulud. It was kind of you to take the trouble to give me your constructive comments. I am also reassured that you feel that it is the right choice. I've no doubt I shall see you again.

trypwriter, this question is mostly a matter of which game type you like most, and none of us have information about this. Thus it is mostly up to you.

There's a GalCiv demo if you wanna test

RubberDucky666 (the devil?): Thank you for your email and I completely agree with you. Why do you have 666 after your name - I thought that that was the devil's number, isn't it? Perhaps I am wrong.
I have now purchased Galactic Civilizations and am awaiting delivery which, I anticipate, will take around a week. I shall then join you in my stumbling way as I hold out my hands and try to find the light switch to turn the game on.
Thank you for your kind help.

I have both X2 and GalCiv. As I can not even get X2 to run on my computer (it crashes about 5 seconds after the first loading screen comes up) I would say that GalCiv is, in my opinion, definitely superior! ;)

these games are in no way the same... if you like space sim flight games play X2, if you like strategy turn based games play GalCiv....

Both games have a following...... both have many mods and developer support, both are great games. Neither are of nearly the same genre.....

Might as well ask if GalCiv is better than Doom3.... (though i would say galciv is better since doom blows, lol.)

aye, both are great. have both, love both. waiting on X² Expansion now.

both Egosoft and Stardock are working hard on maintaining their games with new stuff and patches.

I wouldnt compare the one with the other nevertheless. apples and oranges.
