Stupid question about Alliances

I have played several games now in which I have researched the tech Alliances, but I have never had that as a choice to arrange with another race on the trade screen. I have even had friendly relations with several races, and still no opportunity to ally with them. What am I missing? What other requirement is necessary?

Your relation to the other races have to be ''CLOSE'' to be able to ally with them...

Hmmm, I managed to ally last night when my relations were "friendly" - unless I'm completely deluded (which is entirely possible)...

Heh, yep - I'm delusional. I just checked that game and can't ally with any "friendly" races. Curse this silly forum's inability to edit posts!
