In a recent game, i watched a pure good Alterian using a terror star against me !!!!!

maybe they were using the Terror Star for the "safety" of the Galaxy?

In my game last nite, the Alterians were at war with everyone (but me, we were allies)....a new minor nation would show up...and within a turn or two, they would declare war on them....

They may be good, but they are some bad dudes...

Doesn't seem like a bug to me... seems like a reasonable AI. :)

A lot of bad things can be justified in the name of good. The Crusades, for instance. :) Just because the Altarians are good doesn't mean they aren't prepared to lay a good whoopin' on any evil ass they come across. :D

"A lot of bad things can be justified in the name of good. The Crusades, for instance."

Hey, the crusades weren't bad. It was western culture uniting against another culture. ;)

But with the Altarians, killing can always be justified if you try, especially if it's against an alien. Therefore it can't be a bug.

Interesting thread.

I suppose that would depend on your definition of "good" vs. "evil." I don't need a philosophic conversation in the galciv forum, but I think that Ancient Warrior makes an excellent point.

Throughout history, civilizations have fought wars and committed vicious attacks in the name of good. In World War II, Allied bombers flatted the German cities(and I mean bombed to rubble) of Dresden and many others. True, they were industrial centers, but the civilian populations took a terrible loss. Hiroshima? Nagasaki? Nuked and destroyed to "win a good war."

Again, I don't want to argue whether or not it was "right" to bomb those cities. Although destroying a city is on a different scale than obliterating a whole planetary system, the philosophy remains the same:
"War is hell." -William Tecumseh Sherman

:notsure: Maybe he was thinking of Terror Stars as "evil tech"? I haven't used Terror Stars (I'm only neutral, and usually win the game pretty early) so I'm not sure what they're classified as. If they are evil tech, I'd be concerned if a Pure Good race got their hands on them (unless it was through conquering). Maybe absolute power corupts absolutely? LOL

maybe their notions of good/evil are reversed in regards to the 'nominal' earth ones. aliens and all...

I have noticed in one game where I made all races Pure Good, that the Drengin still demanded money to keep peace, then when everyone went broke they basically conquered the entire galaxy. Actually, I have yet to see a game where the AI wins without a military victory but maybe that is just me and my constant losing...I will beat the sub-normal AI! :p

ok, this is a flash-back from lengthy and perpetual D&D RPG alignment threads. (heh, there is even a name for them YAAT (Yet Another Alignment Thread))...

one of the more popular rationalizations for paladins ransacking graveyards in search of shiny armor was 'They are good but they are not stupid' :p

seriously, if Terror Stars are defined as 'evil tech' by the game then I'd call that a bug, unless the AI has become self-aware, or something ;p

Terror Stars are not evil tech.

You can install a party palace in them :D

More relevantly to my life, there are so many bad ways to be good. ;)
