Off Topic: Any chance of getting a threaded forum system in here?

For the record, I'm really impressed by this game. However, I am wondering if there is any plan to get a more flexible threaded forum system in here at some point? This thing is getting harder and harder to sift out the signal from the noise due to the linear nature of the forum structure.

With the popularity of GalCiv growing so fast, I can see swamping coming fast. It would really be helpful to have some categories (especially for beginners looking for suggestions and clarifactions).

If I'm the only one with this observation, I'll just shaddap. ;)

There has been documentation on SDC from day 1. It's right in the downloads section here.

Erm, the only documentation I see shows you how to register your software and a quick FAQ on downloading updates with SDC.

The Help that comes as part of SDC, if you lookup Discussions, you get a big screenshot of discussions and a little blurb that says this is where the Discussions are.

Is there some other place of documentation?

P.S. As you can see I am tryind to use SDC (but still getting myself into trouble...see my other topic on having Hidden my Galciv installation).

So, here's a suggestion. Can you up the display of pages at the bottom to >10? Even at the minimum width of the application, you should be good to 15 or so.

Can there be a non-pane-specific update button for the threads? I don't like auto-update for various reasons, but having to put my focus up to the top before hitting F5 is a minor pain.

"But don't take this the wrong way but the idea of tossing out months of work on the forum system we have here because some people don't want to take the 10 minutes to learn to use the forums on SDC is not going to be very popular with the people I'd have to make work on this stuff."

Ok, I can agree with this sentiment - you put a lot of time into the SD forums and don't want to dump it. Still, there would be less grumbling if there were SOME instructions on how to use it, and if certain things that should be intuitive, like sorting by chronological order functioned as you expect they should. Have you noticed that the times are just sort of grouped in some sort of semi-random fashion?

Most every forum system follows pretty much the same standard operational template, which makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I think the reason that people are griping about the SD system is that it seems to be simply following its own inscrutable logic, with no real hints to the users about what that logic IS. It might take 10 minutes if there was some documentation, but as it stands it's pretty hard to see how the SD system is superior to what we are all used to using out in the world.

This is really a fairly minor gripe when you take it in the light of an otherwise great release/support effort, but it's little speedbumps like this that always seem to fuel the nay-sayers and flamers. In the long run, people will collect wherever the info is the most topical and presented in the best way. It'll be interesting to see how the system evolves over time.

I also think these forums shouldn't 'require' SDC. Look at the average age of a galciv player and you'll see a good portion are in their 20's - 40's. We're sitting at work reading these forums. Many of us wont have the ability nor right to install SDC on our work machines. I ask that whatever functionality you incorporated into SDC is made available on the web side of the forums too, not just within SDC.

Most users on WinCustomize.com, which gets 10X the traffic of this site, are >30 and that forum isn't even as advanced as this one (no stickies). You don't have to use SDC to hang out there, it just makes it even better.
