Starship combat question

If a stack of ships with a range of defensive values is attacked by a single enemy ship - what ship does the computer select to act as the primary defensive ship for that round of combat?

Does it go with the ship with the highest defense value, the ship that is "first" in the stack or some other random selection?

Also, if a stack with similar ships is attacked but one or more of those ships is carrying battle damage, does the computer take any of that into consideration when assigning the defender?

Not sure. It will always attack non-military ships last, but what order it chooses the ships in I don't know. I'm fairly sure that damage is ignored and that it will keep attacking the same ship until defeated.

Personally, I'm disappointed it doesn't take any fleet options into consideration. If you get into a fight with someone and he has two buddies with him, you don't fight one while the other two watch, all three pummel on you.

Was that just too unbalancing?
